After I primed a metal model with Dupli-Color Sandable Primer found some cracks that needed filling again along a already glazed puttied spot. How do you make it all look like the same? Hard to explain but I already had two coats of white primer. Filled the crack. Sanded down to bare metal around the puttied spot then primed the local area again. The area around the puttied spot is grayer from the metal sprayed underneath than the area that now has ~ 3 coats. Afraid when I apply the final red coats there still will be differences between the two areas. I don't have to remove all primer/paint again do I? I seem to come onto this problem often and have not ever read how to resolve this problem. Just generally told to prime, sand, prime, sand, maybe more prime and sand then final coats. No one ever mentions remove all paint after sanding. Appreciate any ideas and or help. What am I doing wrong? Too many coats of primer on one area? Do I need to remove all paint or just try to remove a coat or two? Is there a better explanation for how much sanding because you got to sand to get the final smooth surface. But then you may have taken too much paint off. Thanks

You say you were spot priming after the fixes, sometimes the primer will change tone if spot priming. Since you are shooting a final coat of red, I suggest you fix all the problems, then shoot an overall coat of white primer as a base for the red. Gray is not really a good primer for red, it can mute the color and make it less bright.

Can I ask why you had cracks? Were your coats of paint too thick?

I must have missed the crack or the glazed putty broke off I don't know but that's why primer used after filling holes or cracks right? Thanks

Indydog, could you not start with grey primer then a white primer then red coats? The grey would still affect the final color of red? Thanks
