I got the color coat on the Etzel Watson. I'm doing the 1960 Dick Rathmann Ken-Paul Special. I found a good match for photographs without custom ordering paint, so I'm satisfied with that. I'll clear coat it, let it dry, then apply decals. Since the graphics on these cars was installed pretty much by hand, I'll clear coat the decals once they're set to make everything look painted on. The wheels are a custom mix of Testors Metalizers--primarily magnesium and brass, with just a little Floquil Old Gold mixed in. Rims are Metalizer Aluminum Buffing, with some extra buffing with aluminum powder in a suspension (it's old--I don't know what it's called). Tires were done thus: I cleaned them and primered them with Plastikote Gray Primer. Then I painted the tires gloss black lacquer. Since decals lay down better over a glossy surface, I figured the black lacquer would stand up to the next steps better. The tread areas were painted with Testors Interior Black, which is actually a dark gray so there'd be a little contrast between the sidewalls and the treads. Decals were applied and given several heavy coats of Microscale Micro Sol to get them to lay down over the compound surfaces. Once those dried (decals on a couple of tires "crept" a little, but it's not too noticeable), I overcoated the tires with Floquil Flat Finish, including the treads. There is a slight difference in shade between sidewall and rim, but it's almost not noticeable, either. But, they're done. Now to the body and decals, and to polishing a whole lot of little tiny metal parts. Ewwww! Then there's the interior. More to come.... Terry

Hi Terry
Looks great.....If I may be so bold, what co,or did you use for the body color? Odd, I am building the same car using DrDave's conversion parts. I too am using a spare set of decals from Etzel's Watson kit...You build the Ward's 1959 winner, you have extras. Looks great...don't you love the look of a Watson Roadster? To me....THAT'S AN INDY CAR!
Good luck and best to you
Russ

Russ, it's a GM Duplicolor spray can. Unfortunately, I used the can as a spray base once, and obliterated the paint code. It's a GM light blue.
Sorry--wish I could be more helpful.

Where did you get the Tire decals? Craig Craig, those were on the Etzel decal sheet. I know that Strada Sports has a Speedline sheet that has all kinds of Goodyear and Firestone lettering, along with different colored tire striping. They also have a few Shabo dry transfer tire lettering sheets with "Firestone" on them. Check their site. www.stradasports.comTerry

Really nice work, Terry! I saw the other post with the decals applied, and I am really looking forward to seeing the completed model. ;D
I should have some Oldsmobile Sapphire Blue Poly on the way for mine.

Outstanding work, Terry. Not to pick nits, but it is Jim Rathmann's ride, not Dick's. Wayne

You are both right..sorta. Dick was really named Jim amd Jim was really named Dick. Long story but true, they each took the others name for racing purposses.
