The rear wing main plane is required to be wrapped per rule book. Any idea why?

Probably to prevent cheating. Not sure what you can hide under paint but I'm sure someone did something in the past that provoked the rule. We are constantly stripping and rewrapping the main plane for tech.

We are constantly stripping and rewrapping the main plane for tech. If IndyCar let teams paint the rear wing, I bet the better funded teams would spend countless hours in CFD and windtunnel time on how the subtle contouring of bodyfiller under the paint on the rear wing changed the drag and downforce numbers. Wrapping the wing seems like a good way to keep the playing field level. Jordan

And you couldn't layer up the vinyl to have the same effect? Ok I'll go now...

And you couldn't layer up the vinyl to have the same effect? Ok I'll go now... The vinyl wraps have to be purchased from Performance Graphics (and maybe one other vendor). If you take the endplates off you could tell how many layers there are. To do any kind of work like you're suggesting would be hard to accomplish on a race weekend. If someone really wanted to do it, they could. But the amount of work involved and the resulting penalty would be big as it would be blatant cheating. I heard laser scanning may be in our future for tech. That would be easier than templates (and likely more accurate). Sorry to hijack your thread. Looks great! You even have the radiator blockers which I never noticed before.

Hmm, so if Performance Graphics can do DHL yellow, maybe AA should let them do their wings and shark fin wraps? Anyway...
Looking great Calvin! The new 28's look much better!

I'd be willing to put down $100 that the front wing was a full wrap. There is some advantage to doing so, and I know why Andretti does it. There is also some advantage to having the wing mainplanes completely unfinished. Go check out the polesitters car the past 2 years, and his teammate this year. That ain't no lack of sponsor or design, that's "NOT FOR SALE" space.

The rear wing main plane is required to be wrapped per rule book. Correct, and only one supplier can wrap it (Performance Graphics). Been that way for at least 10 years, if not more. It has an INDYCAR serial number and everything on it. It's up on the underside (right side of car, if facing it from nose) of the rear wing along with the PG logo. You can't have the wrap on before you go through initial tech, as I recall, but once its on it can stay on. If removed, you have to go back through. People would also probably be surprised to know those endfences aren't all painted up pretty and smooth either. You'll print vinyl that closely matches your paint to cover up the different adjustment pins. Can't be seen from far away, but if you get close you will see it clear as day.

Calvin, this model is looking great. I am doing mine using the 1/24 scale Auto World cars and I tell you your lines and dimensions were spot on with the your first release of this kit. I am only doing the '12-'14 winners so they match my '05-'11 winners so my kit will probably go to a different home eventually. I am having doubts as to the Daytona yellow wings with my build. It's been proven that they were different than the rest of the car color but every time I see a farther away photo, my eyes want them all to be the same color. I even watched the in car cameras as Ryan pulled into Victory Lane and could see the the front wing color was different. I know you love color debates and your colors look like what mine are too. I'm just thinking I want this whole car to be chrome yellow. What do you guys think cause it's keeping me from moving forward with my existence?

What do you guys think cause it's keeping me from moving forward with my existence? while it is for sure a two-tone car. Ultimately it is a hobby and you can paint you build whatever you want. The recommendations for paint are there in case you want spray can colors that look to accurate or as close as possible. Build so that you are happy, that is all that really matters. Jordan

I will say that, though obviously it's not the 500 car, RHR's car at Sonoma this weekend clearly had different color front wings and side splitter. I was paying attention specifically to this as I am planning on this car. It was obvious on the track and very clearly in the pits. My 2 pesos on the matter. :-) MJ

Nice looking trio there Calvin! Looking forward to the 2015 car and crossing my fingers that Michael does decals for Dixie's car in addition to Montoya's.

Nice looking trio there Calvin! Looking forward to the 2015 car and crossing my fingers that Michael does decals for Dixie's car in addition to Montoya's. A couple of factors are involved in how many decal options there will be. Of course how well they sell and how many kits I can crank out......I'll be honest, Michael could be selling more DW12 decals but I haven't produced enough......but since I'm more healthy now-a-days I should be able to do my part and produce a heck of a lot more! I'm sure Dixon decals will happen as those are pretty easy to do. BTW I'm working on the DW12 re-issue RIGHT now and the new Aero kits!
