I just finished this one, Rodger Ward's 1959 Leader Card Watson roadster. The kit is. Lance Seller's reissue of the Etzel's Speed Classics Watson. Before I go any further I need to say that if you have this kit and have any trepidation or hesitance in building this car, don't. This kit is a masterpiece of design and goes together easier than many plastic kits I've built. I can't say enough good things about this car.
Of all the drivers that contested the Indianapolis 500, Rodger Ward and Jim Clark are my two favorites. Ward was a saavy tactician who became a contender year in and year out once he got his life together after the 1955 Indianapolis 500.
This car was the first Indianapolis collaboration of "The Flying Ws." Along with Ward, AJ Watson was the Chief Mechanic as well as car builder and Bob Wilke was the owner. The collaboration worked for the 1959 500 and for the next five years that saw two Indianapolis 500 wins along with an incredible streak of finishes in the 500 (first in '59, second in '60, third in '61, first in '62, fourth in '63 and second in '64) and two National championships ('59 and '62).
I built the kit box stock with the exception of adding the seatbelts. The car is painted Tamiya Pure White, the oil cooler is Tamiya Italian Red, the roll bar is Tamiya Fluorescent Red, the wheels are Champagne Gold with a black wash and the seat is Tamiya Semi-Gloss Black. I polished the white metal pieces with a fingernail file, it really shined up the metal nicely! The exhaust pipe was polished and then I used the Tamiya metal weathering set to give it a realistic look. I think I may have overdone it, but it is a good first effort (thank you Calvin for the advice on what to use)! I also used a black wash to add some depth to the panel lines.
All in all I'm pleased with how it turned out, what do you guys think?
