Could any of you tell me the preferred green to use on Gaston Chevrolet's 1920 Monroe? Did Louis Chvrolet, also, drive a Monroe in that race, or a Frontenac. Thank you very much.

Hey Smokey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You got one of the old Aurora/Best Monroe's? You lucky dog!!..I'm looking for one. According to Chris Etzel's instruction sheet for his 1920 Indy Winner Kit....which is beautiful! Chris did some excellent research on all of his models. I quote from his instruction sheet, My remarks in (), "Body over all dark green, (Almost British Racing Green), Nose red, (Bright Red). Wheels and numbers were white. Despite a widely published photograph taken before the race, the car had a smooth paint job job on the nose and the wind screen was painted dark green to match the body, This information comes from film footage of Gaston pulling into victory lane."
I hoped I helped! Best to you!

Thanks, Russ. Yes, I've got the Aurora kit. I want to do Louis' car, too. I just don't know if it was green, or red.

Hey Smokey!!!!!!
I just check the Jack C. Fox book, "The Indianapolis 500" which has photos of every car that has run at Indy and it's color. It says, "The only difference between the Monroe's and Fonteanc's was the color's of the cars.......Monore's were green, the Fonteanc's were plum or red." Louis' car was green all over, with a white number "3". Hope I helped you on this one. Louis' car lasted 18 laps before it's steering went bad. Good luck to you!

I've got a couple of other questions. SORRY! Did these cars have painted dashes, like the 1921 Deusenburg, or were the dashes bare aluminum, perhaps machine turned, as the slightly later Millers did? Second, was the upholstery and the cockpit combing black, tan, or brown? Thanks a bunch.

Wow, Russ, that looks super! With my recent acquisition of an Etzel Duesenberg, that kit has moved to 2nd place on my "most wanted" list, right behind Chris' Watson Roadster! Sure wish I had been able to get them when he was in production!

Hi ya Greg.....
The cars that were called "Monroe's" were green...almost a British Racing Green.....The "Fontenac's" were red according to the Jack C. Fox book...and according to expert on the cars...Chris Etzel. The next year...After Gaston was killed driving a green car....which started the superstition that green n a race car was bad luck....some Monroe's were gren...but the Fontenac's were plum or purle......like Tommy Milton's winner.
Best to you
Russ

I'll be first bid but I can't afford to get into a bidding war.

so.....if this car was GREEN in real life, why did Aurora mold it in BLUE? I've been confused about this for years....dating back to the late 50s when the kit was originally released.
there's one of these on ebay with about an hour left on the bidding. highest bid? $75!!! of course that's for a "new, never opened, still sealed in the original plastic" kit.
probably worth it, since you just don't see these every day.......
