I hate to start another car color debate, but does anyone know the real color of Herk's 1964 Tombstone Life ride. Obviously red and I assume it could be the fluorescent red of the Novi. However, from the 3 photos I could find it could be plain old red or a more orange/red (probably close to the Novi) or this weird reddish/pickish mess. As always, I appreciate you help and encouragement. I got the plans for this car from Walt, the tires from Calvin, and maybe Calvin's 64 Calhoun nose will work when he finishes it. kip

No color debate here! I'm 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% sure its Fluorenscent Red.
Many light coats of Tamiya TS-36 Fluorescent Red will do the trick.
Old pictures can never handle the very bright fluo red.

Thanks Calvin. 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% is good enough for me. Now, if you could finish the 64 Calhoun nose. Please, please, please, please.

Yep... the car passes the black-and-white photo test - it is light grey. If it was regular red it would show up as very dark grey.

Calvin is correct. I remember this car well and fluorenscent red is correct.

I have a small piece of the car in a frame with a photo of the car, i removed the sample myself, so there is no doubt that the car is flourescent red.

Rick
Thanks for the info on the color. If the picture you have is different from the ones I have posted, could you possibly post it. The photos I posted are the only ones I could find.
I read where at one time you were looking for decals to model this car. Did you ever find any? I really hate the thought of trying to make my own.

I only received a partial set, the gentleman who made them had health issues and couldn't finish the sponsorship. I appreciate what i have but can't work on the car as it is in Tennessee where i moving and i'm stioll in Wisc. I should be seeing Andy Hurtubise at Milwaukee in July for the Miller show. There are a lot of photos of the car on the "net" and i have bought a few more at Milwaukee.

Herk's dirt car was painted Fluorescent Orange with White and Gold trim, sponsored by Sterling Plumbing, the car was at Indy a couple of years ago for the memorabilia show display. The Car is owned by a Gentleman in Terre Haute In. Herk's sprint car which is in pieces is here in the St. Louis area.

Duh. If had just thought a bit. The book "Herk" has several pages about this car and it says it was fluorescent red. Not that I doubted you all, but I could have saved you the trouble. And of course you were right,
Some interesting stuff about the car. Herk moved the magneto into the cockpit to reduce vibration and installed a drive shaft from the magneto to the engine. Anybody know what that looked like--any pictures out there.
Another item, Herk was using an Offy that was different from the norm. Doesn't say how it was different except it leaked oil and may have cost him the race. He was third behind Foyt and Ward. Foyt needed one more pit stop, Ward needed two, Herk didn't need any more as he had an extra 15 gallon tank near the right front. (He put the extra tank in to help the handling. Apparently the big air intake on the nose was lifting the right front.) As the fuel load lightened, he was running fast with no more stops needed. Anyhow, the Offy ran dry of oil and quit and the rest is history.
Any help, knowledge, or pictures would really be appreciated as I am really excited about building this.

The 15 Gallon tank in the right front was his undoing at Milwaukee the next weekend when he crashed early in the race and hit the wall with the right front of the car , this is the fire that burnt Jim so bad. If you look at pictures closely you will see quite a few differences from standard Watsons. Coil over shocks a much narrower tail cone/fuel tank. If you have Bob's drawings you can see the changes This car was built new in 1964 by Jim and his brother Pete. And there is no mistaking this car was FLUORESCENT RED!!

It would be interesting to find out just how it was "different". Likely a bore&stroke thing. I don't think anything really caused it to leak oil. All those Offys leaked oil. Those big oil tanks on the roadsters were not there for looks. Anything under 10 gal. for the race was pretty much nornal.
