Thank you for posting this. It brought back a lot of memories. Some good, some not so good. So many are gone. Sid Collins (so many years of his voice on my radio--hearing his voice come on the air was like listening to my favorite song--it meant the 500), Sachs, Macdonald, Clark, Ruby, Herk, Jack Brabham, roadsters, Novis, and many more.

I guess I should say thanks for sharing this. It brings back almost too much. I was the Chief Serial Scorer for USAC at this race which was my second to work. I was seated in the far northwest corner of the timing and scorer floor. The second lap crash was horrible. I was expected to serial score while this was happening to the right of my field of vision which was focused on the start/finish line. It was just awful as an official and, most of all, as a fan. My serial sheets were used to help establish the line-up for the restart. Seeing the red flag this past Sunday brought back this memory as well as others such as 1966 and 1973. Some things we don't forget. Jim

Brought back some bad memories, I was glued to the radio that day, like every race day. Read Johnny Rutherford's book about finding the lemon Sachs always sucked during the race in the front of his car, after the crash. As Duane said, it still brings a chill. Craig

What a remarkable broadcast. I remember the day well. Those of us who are old enough will recall that this was the first 500 televised live via closed-circuit television. I watched it at a downtown theater in Oklahoma City. I just finished the book "Black Noon," and highly recommend it to those who haven't already read it.
