OK, I check that I write too much and build too little.
So let's try to fix that.
Let's build some damn models!!!
My unfinished love story with Indycar racing modeling started back in 1986. I bought a magazine where they reported Rahal's Indy win and there was a nice exploded drawing of Emmo's March. I got instantly hooked.
I decided I wanted to make that car. Those days there was no internet and there were no F-Indy models readily available in my country, so it was not till 1990 that I actually bought some kits. I got the Valvoline car, the STP one, and two Mac tools Lolas. All were Monograms, sure!!
I still remember they cost 1400 pesetas each one, some 10 bucks today.
I instantly turned it all upside down and made an '89 Valvoline Lola from one of the '88 Lolas, with the March's decals. I worked hard on Al, jr.'s Lola.
I let it almost finished, only missing the wings... and that's all she wrote!!!
I also transformed one of the Lolas into an '89 M'boro Penske for Fittipaldi. I planned to make some '88 and '91 Penskes from the rest of kits. Surely I still didn't know anything about the AMT nice kits.
Since that moment, I have edged the Indycar modeling now and then, bought more kits... but never found a moment to make not a decent build, but any build at all.
So let's go for it!! I think it's fine to make all three cars in one WIP. After all, it's almost the same car but for the liveries.
You'll get the impression I start from a pile of junk. No, it's the kits I've been pulling apart into pieces those years, to think what I could do with this and that.
Not much mistery, there's one untouched Mac's kit...
then there's the body of Raynor's Lola and another white one.
Some sub asemblies are started from my group build old effort, almost 25 years ago. I hope all is there, that's also a good chance to make use of all these loose parts
And these parts will wait for another build...
I don't plan ultra fine builds and I know the Monograms don't have great prestige, but I'd like to get something decent from them before taking the AMT's
Well, the planned models are
-Granatelli's STP Guerrero's 88 ride
-Jim Crawford's '88 Indy 6th placed car
-and double winner Fittipaldi's Lola T8700 (In fact's ex-Mario's car) of late '88 season
I think I've never seen a build of this latter so it'll be fun.
First I'll try to see what I have almost built...
Well, I'll use one Chevy motor I got with a kits set. It has even wiring, so not bad. I also have the V6 Buick half built and I'll build the Cosworth DFX for the STP car. I have better DFX from the AMT kits so no need to keep this one to make eventual resin copies. The others, I also have more of them. Damn I chose these because the stuff was available without compromises
I do know the Monogram is unaccurate, though I feel the AMT's are not perfect either... In this case, there's a general oversizing (even for 1/24th) particularly, I checked, on the body width. Which is worse when you consider that wheels are closer to 1/25th than 1/24th. Nevertheless let's try to make them and see what happens...
Also I had an idea: the Monogram tyres have raised letters on the outside. Not feeling like sanding them off, I'll leave those on the inside and put decals on the outside.
Some days later I put again everything on the table, and there seems to be something missing: I rmemeber I glued two turbos and had taken apart the fluo red one from the DFX engine, but I can't seem to find it. No problem, I doubt I'll run short of turbos anyway!
So I put apart what I have clear...
So I finally manage to put together all the parts needed for threee and JUST three cars. I doubt if one of them will be in road course or speedway specs, so I take two wing sets of each. The other two cars will be one speedway, one road course.
And that's the three motors:
Some things I have clear are
-Boesel's car has chrome suspensions
-Crawford's has black ones
-There's a long rocker arm missing on the Monogram suspension layout. I'll try to replicate it, as its lack stands out too much on a finished car.
-I know the cars are unaccurate, but I'll try to depict them as closest to real as I can, without going to town for it, either. I plan to:
-fill the front wishbone attaching points and placing them better
-smoothen nose cone shape
-trim the windshields when needed, replace Crawford's with a clear vacformed one.
-Add some detail here or there as Emmo's bigger brake scoops
-And Emmo's suspensions??? the few pics I have show clearly NO chrome, but not sure if it's black... It might be some metallic grey?
-Also have doubts on the exhausts layout. I do have some T8800 pics of this area, it seems there was a central big exhaust, together with the waste gate small one, instead of the short side exit that Monogram gives. But I do know that this varied from car to car, and team to team...
-I'd THANK so much having pics of this area of the three cars... particularli Fittipaldi's Lola of which pics are really hard to come by...
So that's it, let's see if I finish the mechanicals to start with the bodyworks..
Cheers to all, thanks for coming
