If there's ever been a reason to get to IMS, it is this. There are currently EIGHT turbines on IMS property right now, one with the vintage cars, and seven in the museum. The museum is currently displaying: 1967 Paxton turbine THREE, 1968 Lotus 56's, including Graham Hills and Joe Leonard's restored to race day livery! Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus 56B F1 car and... TWO Shelby Turbines!

Wow! That's awesome, I would kill to be able to get up that way. Has there ever been a 1/24 or 1/25 kit of the 56b?

Really nice to see this! What happened to the mirrors on Joe Leonard’s car? They used to be there. Wonder what will be done with the car with the nose removed that has No. 70 on it. I believe that chassis is Art Pollard’s No. 20. I wish that one was redone to its proper history. Love the Shelbys! Hmmm, how hard would it be to modify a Jorgenson kit…………………if only someone would do a decal sheet. Paul Erlendson

The blue car was to be driven by Denny Hulme and the gold car by Bruce McLaren in 1968. Car was designed by Wallace engineering whom I believe designed the 67 turbine.

They are interesting and it is too bad they never ran. Looks like the '67 turbine could be lightly modified to make one of these. Jordan

Correct Michael. The Shelby turbine was designed by Ken Wallis, who also did the '67 Paxton Turbine. Cars were withdrawn in 1968 claiming it may not be possible to safely produce a competitive turbine powered car, this following Mike Spece's untimely demise. It has been reported that the real reason was the car was illegal with a variable inlet that allowed to to open greater than reduced size for 1968, or they were not actually able to get the inlet size down to the regulation size.
They practiced/tested May 1 & 5, with complaints about handling and lack of speed. By the end of the day May 7, the cars had been withdrawn!
Ken Wallis is said to have also participated in the design of the Lear Vapordyne steam engine Indy car. A chassis was completed, but they apparently could never get the engine right.

Noticed the AMT logo on the side of the Shelby cars. Wonder if there were plans to produce models if they made the race? They are nice looking cars!
