Hello, I've been building plastic kit car models for many years - and am comfortable with resin - but never an Indy car. I would like to try a 1950s/1960s era, Offy-powered car but I'm having trouble locating what I might need (and not knowing what I do need).
There seems to have been only two kits made - the AMT Watson type and the Monogram Kurtis - and while I think I like the look of the Watson better that one appears to be difficult to find (especially for delivery to Canada). I haven't decided on which car to replicate; my inclination (at the moment, at least) is for an interesting paint job and looks rather than historic driver/team. I've always liked to detail an engine so my questions are:
Should I start with a plastic kit and upgrade it; if so, where to find one (I've looked on EBay)? Where can I obtain parts to upgrade the kit (other than decals which I believe can be had from IndyCals)?

Calvin - Chaparral2k - makes a correct nose and vac-u-form windscreen. I have the the correct tires... usually. Out of stock right now, waiting for more.

If you like to detail engines, and go for multicolor paint jobs, the AMT Watson is the one you are looking for. Once you get stsrted, any questions, just ask. That's what this board is all about. Lance has a super Watson that he reissues from time to time. Craig

Hopefully this summer I'll be coming out with:
1962 150mph Old Calhoun conversion for AMT. -Tire/wheels -Nose -Hood -Shroud -Oil tank -windscreen -helmet with 150 silver dollars inside it.
1964 Old Calhoun conversion for AMT -Ram air nose -Tires/wheels -Windscreen
Then later on a generic Watson conversion for the AMT kit.
Sometime soon I'll be coming out with the update kit for the Monogram Kurtis Kraft kit.

Guys, thanks for the info. I've ordered the Old Calhoun nose from chaparral2k, but am wondering if anyone has a spare 1963 Watson 'Parnelli Jones' kit for sale. I did find the triple-pack All Stars kits with three cars but really only need the one.

You should be able to sell the Lotus easily, the McLaren, not so much.

Ken, Let me know what you work out regarding the AMT Watson. I obtained several with the intent of building all of the Watsons as they first appeared at Indy. The after market parts are spot-on in terms of accuracy so feel free to go with those. If you use the AMT Watson kit, make sure you shorten the front axle about 1/4" to get the front track about right. And, whatever you do, don't use the tires that come with the kit. They are so far off it is not funny. Good luck. Jim
