Hi All,
I am looking for the answer as to the color on A.J.'s '61 winner. The Museum car has candy red, and a couple pictures of the actual car it is hard to tell. I believe the car, as raced, had a normal red paint on the nose. So, which is it?
Thanks! Mongo

All the GOOD images I've seen from 1961 look like regular red, and certainly NOTHING like the current red.

If you have the Scalzo roadster book, there is a pic on page 91 of the 1962 car being pushed through gasoline alley and dd it is not a metallic/candy apple red. There is a pic in the inset of the page that is a little more ambiguous but it is not as reliable as the larger image IMO. Also a good lci of the 61 car on the top of page 89 and again - it is clearly plain red (and I consider that image to be VERY good quality. You can even see the pearl color of the car compared to the white of the contingency sponsors. I don't think you will find a better color image of the car - taken in 1961 - than that image.

I agree with Michael, the 1961 car appears to have been plain red. I always thought the car was a Watson, it was a copy of a Watson built by someone else, name escapes me.
The 64 car was A.J.'s first Watson and it was painted candy apple red on the nose and pearl white overall. Paint was done in California by Dean Jeffries, supposedly for $150, that included the numbering and lettering...super bargain!

I agree that the 1961 car was red, white, and black, the colors of his sponsor Bowes Seal Fast. The '64 car was actually a 1963 that had been driven by Edd Rose. The '61 car was a Trevis copy of a Watson. Jim

Was the tip of the nose pure white or did have peal white just like the rest of the car?

Page 121 in the 2011 Indianapolis Sports Illustrated Program book there is a pic of the race day 1961 Winner and you can clearly see that its just red.

Thanks, Guys, for all the replies! I am guessing that Tamiya Italian Red will match Micheal's decals. ??

Hi Michael, So the body was a pearl white? Thanks, Bill

Yes the body was Pearl white. But my question is, does the tip of the nose have peal white as well or is it just reg. white?
