Very sad news. Should have won Indy at least once!

I got a call earlier this evening informing me of Garys passing. My avatar is Gary living his way and enjoying. My love of menard cars was because of Gary and Scotty. I had a convo with Gary at indy in 2008 and one thing he told me was after a fan asked him about his "gimp" arm and he said what the hell was i going to do? all i know is racing! RIP Gary B

72 was really sad, I wanted Gary to win so bad. His interview on the radio was heartbreaking. Every fan of Indy has a spot in their heart for the name Bettenhausen. RIP Gary, and thanks.

I was at the Syracuse mile when Gary had the Dirt Champ Car wreck that caused his "gimp" arm and lost him the Penske ride. He crossed the line for the first green lap of warm-ups, the announcer had time to say "new track record", then into turn one, end-over-end, over the wall, one roll on the roof of a concession stand and then back onto the track, leaning on the wall, no front end at all. Got to see the remains of his car up close in the pits after the race, that's when I learned about chrome-moly being brittle! ALWAYS rooted for him after that, at Indy or IRP or wherever. A class act, too! He'll be missed.

It's always sad to lose one of the guys who could -- and would -- drive anything he could get his hands on. Not many of them left.

Certainly GB is at or near the top of the list of drivers who never won Indy. Sleep well, champ...
