I'm glad this one turned out good, I hope I never have to do that many long thin stripes on a car ever again. Attachments:

Okay, now you're just showing off. I have that kit and dread doing the decals. I'll have to order several sets from Michael. Great job.

Very pretty! Why aren't more 2k's built? This is what Indycar modeling is all about - skirts and Ground Effects. Like I've said before, Real racecars wear skirts!

What I am also liking is that up and coming Penske in the background.

2 really nice builds, Dustin. Lots of neat stuff lately. The machine had better start checking his mirrors. Take Care Craig

Looks good, nice work on the decals. The '81 looks to be coming along well, too.

Hey Dustin, You didn't say, but I'm assuming that is Rick's 2K kit. If yes, could you give us some tips for those of us that haven't started working on it yet? It's my intention to build this for our club's contest challenge this year which is "Resin", and it'll be my first resin kit build. I'm working on an AMT Watson which will use Calvin's Old Calhoun replacement nose, but that's not enough resin to qualify for the challenge (must be at least a full body in resin). Great job on one of the most beautiful race cars of all time! Cameron www.rpmmodelclub.com/

Yes it is Rick's kit. The kit was amazing. It required very little cleanup. Just by going by his directions it went together very smooth. The only way I strayed from his direction was I painted the car before attaching the front suspension since I prefer to spray it black. Make sure you test fit the front suspension very well first since it has to be shortened. I didn't and then I had try and eyeball it and not mess up the paint. For the stripes, I cut them into smaller sections so they were easier to manage. It's a pain to try and line up everything but much easier than trying not to tear the long decals while trying to go around corners.

All,
The correct paint for this kit should be Tamiya TS-16 Yellow, not TS-34 Camel Yellow, as indicated in the instructions. Got my Tamiya Yellows mixed up for some unexplained reason. Dustin provides great advice for applying the red striping. Cutting the decals into 1.5" lengths allows for easier application so that the decals won't wrap around themselves. Same method should be used for the Belond '57-58 Winner that I offer.

Actually the original 1980 Pennzoil Chaparral had a metallic marbling yellow. See attachments for full story Attachments:

Good story, Calvin, but I think I would stick with the Tamiya.

Tamiya had a Penzoil Pearl Yellow spray for a Nissan Skyline but I think it was a limited edition. TS16 is fine but a little pearl would make it pop.

but I think I would stick with the Tamiya. I'm bored lets start a color debate! How about this... Tamiya TS-65 Clear Pearl over TS-16 Yellow?

Great story about the paint job. Seems everything connected with Jim Hall has a cool story attached to it.

NOOOOO, it makes my head hurt, and then I try to hide under the bed, but I'm too big to fit. Sometimes it gets so bad I have to resort to wine. On second thought, go right ahead. Craig

How about this... Tamiya TS-65 Clear Pearl over TS-16 Yellow? That's what's so great about these forums! From looking at all the photos of the 2K I have or online, I had got it in my head that TS-16 was too bright, so I bought a can each of TS-16 and TS-47 Chrome Yellow so I could do a comparison to decide which looked closer to what I thought the color should be. But now it sounds like the brighter the better, so I'll be going with TS-16 topped with TS-65 Pearl. Thanks for the terrific info, Calvin. Never would have known otherwise. Cameron

I used MCW Penzoil yellow for this and it has that pearlescent quality, and looks a lot like the finish in Calvin's picture. Doesn't really show in my picture, but it does in the flesh.

What a story about the paint! A real drama, just to paint the car! It would make a great, can't-put-it-down book by Arthur Hailey! Screen play to follow! NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!! --Frank
