I'm intrigued by these kits, but I've heard the tires are not that great. Are there aftermarket tires that would work?
Thanks, John

Well John it's kinda like this... yes and no. Yes, they are intriguing kits and the tires ARE not that great. And NO there are no perfect aftermarket tires. That being said that leaves the "out of stock" MFH 70's sports car tires (they're not bad for F1, but better for F5000). I put a set on my early Heller Lotus 49 and my convert McLaren M10B. I have also mixed vinyl tires from different kits (AMT and MPC), but with mixed results...the Heller Matra MS10. My personal favorite are the tires I used on the MS11 F1. They were from a good friend and made in black resin. He might speak up about these, but I don't know their original starting point. The kits are worth it as there isn't much made in this time period.

PS- Here's what I think can be made from these kits...
Lotus 49: early 49 with nose mods and ZF transaxle, later 49 built as OTB or various teams
McLaren M7A: Built OTB as M7A wit or without kit side tanks/pannier tanks/or small side tanks, M7C with funny shaped side tanks, M10B F5000 with added engine monocoque
Matra MS5: MS5 OTB F2, a F3 with new engine, prototype MS9 F1, MS10 F1, MS11 F1
Brabham BT33: a OTB team car with /without sports car nose, maybe, just maybe a BT26 F1 or a BT29/35 F2
Brabham BT15/18: OTB F3, with engine change a F2, with a windscreen change a BT21 F2 could be made, and the chassis works well as a chassis for a BT7 F1 with front suspension change and a modified Strombecker slot body

Thanks Patrick, I don't think I'll get any better advice than what you can provide. I love the era that these kits portray. If I can get one at a good price maybe I'll give it a go and see what I think.

I presume Patrick is referring to my tires. They will be available shortly. I based them on the tires in the Fujimi 917K. They were re-sized to fit AMT McLaren M16 wheels. The fronts were cut and glued to fit the smaller wheels and the rears had the insides filled to make a taller sidewall. I'm not 100% happy with them but I'm too lazy to remaster them.

I'm interested in these tires ( at least three sets ) as well. Is it possible to post any pictures of them ?
