Hey Guys, I was really hoping for some help since this area of building is out of my usual area. My father and I were talking about Model car's we've always wanted to build and mentioned one he's always had on his want list. He worked for EDS for several years, and is now retired, but has always wanted to build this car. I am to be honest hoping someone can help me with information about the series, the car, is there a kit, decals, resin, ect, really anything pertaining to building a scale version of this car? Thanks guys in advance Chris

The car is a Intrepid GTP which ran in the IMSA GTP series, The car first ran in 1992 thru 1993. It won 1 race in 1992 at Watkins Glen with Tommy Kendall driving. The car was Fast but always had something happen to kept it out of Victory Circle. I would think that it has been done in 1/43 scale by someone , but I haven't been able to locate one, as almost all race cars have been done in 1/43 scale.

There are some good detail pixs of this car at the link including the engine detail shots. While I was Goolging I did happen on an old eBay link to a 1/43 version of the car. Perhaps there is a Tamiya 1/24 kit that might be a good starting point if you what to try to reproduce this car in a larger scale. Decals will be a problem. Perhaps a Tamiya Nissan R89C? Rusty

The picture you have is of the 1991 Intrepid RM-1 with a n/a Chevy V-8 it was first raced in the IMSA Camel GTP starting in the middle of the season. The first part they used Spice Chassis with Chevys. There was two Drivers for the Intrepted team in 1991 - Wayne Taylor (ZA) and Tom Kendall (USA. Taylor won at New Orleans street race in a rain soaked event. But that was the only victory for this car. In 1992 the team cut down do just one car with Tom Kendall in a white and blue scheme. The car had just mediocre success that year as the Jaguar and Dan Gurney's Toyota's crushed the field that year. BTW I'm a self proclaimed expert on 1981-1993 IMSA GTP But when it comes to a model of this car I have no idea....I've never seen one.

MA Scale Models has 2 versions of the Intreped you are looking for. Follow the link below and scroll on thru and you will see the kits there. These are 1/43 scale kits. They require a bit of clean up but build up very nicely. mamodels.com/mod-imsa.html

I have only seen the car modeled in 1/43 scale. The MA Scale Models look very nice but unfortunately it is 1/43.

There s a book on the GTP era (Inside IMSA's legendary GTP cars) that has a lot of great photos as well as the history on this and most other cars from the series, it's about $40 and well worth it. The car was designed by Bob Riley and had an enormous amount of downforce, so much (10,000 lbs.) that it actually slowed the car down on the straights to the tune of 15-30 mph less than the other front-runners. By all accounts, the car was straight-forward, inexpensive, and Riley had plans to sell it. Unfortunately, this was also the car that Tommy Kendall had his horrific crash in that mangled his legs. The crash pretty much put the kibosh on the program as interest dried up and the money soon did as well. As far as building a model, MA models is your best/only choice unless you scratch-build the entire thing (the book does probably have enough good pics to make a go of it if you wanted). Sports car models are a tough get, much more so in a scale beyond 1/43.

That is such an awesome car. Saw it race at Road America, sounded great. Loved the idea of an American car beating the Nissans, but by then Toyota and AAR had shown up. As I recall that car was American built as well, come to think of it. Kendall's wreck was really horrific. That, as Scott said along with the Toyotas killed it.
I've looked too and only found the MA kits. There may be a few old 1/43 diecasts around.

If you watch eBay, you can sometimes see the older Starter kits for sale, for both the White/Blue/Yellow car, and the Blue / White later model. Nice bodies, with Gold Photo etch inserts for the Wheel centers. Both kits are pretty rare, but they do show up from time to time.
I don't doubt that the MA kits are based on that original Starter body. MA does offer the version with the open rear wheels, which gives the car a very different look.
Don't be turned off by the small size of 1/43 - different in terms of build, but very nice when done. Starter / MA kits are a good way to start in 1/43, as they do not have the high parts count of some newer brands. MA are usually the most basic 1/43 kit option on the market; they do a TON of Indy cars, 1911 through the 90s. Always clear coat the decals for Starter!!

I had this as a Starter kit years ago. It was a very simple build and it turned out looking great. Unfortunately I sold it on eBay about six years ago. Definitely keep an eye out for the Starter kit.
