I am NOT a very accomplished or prolific builder, but as a long time Indy 500 fan I love this forum. Somehow my son caught on and surprised me with this for Xmas. Looking for comments from more experienced builders: 1)Opinions regarding this kit and ease of build. 2)I think there were only a handful of March Chevys in the 1988 Indy 500. How difficult to build as Emmos car? I think he was either 2nd or 3rd that year. 3)If so, where to get “smoking” type decals? Thanks. Scott

Most of us much prefer the AMT kits to the Monogram, Scott. However if you want something to get yourself started building, go for it. Now and then a mystery cowboy drops some decals off at Calvin's place. Send him a PM and you might be in luck. Take Care Craig

That is awesome. It is nice when the kids start getting you gifts. The Monogram kit is a good kit depending on how picky you get and detailed with the kit. It goes together fairly easy. Like I said it depends if gaps bug you are not you may want to do a little fill here and there. I like these models with the removable cowlings. They show off the engine detail. Have fun and always come back for more advice and help. Also do a build WIP we love to see the progress as she goes. There are no experts here just model builders.

There is a very detailed build of this car in an old Motor Racing Replica News magazine that would help with detail. Somebody help me remember the issue #.

Thanks guys. I'd rather build Emmo's car than Lil Al. Will be contacting Indycal for the 89 decals and Calvin for the "fill-ins" but need to get thru busy holidays first....... And, OK, I'll try a WIP. But if the WIP ends at some point short of completion, you'll know I likely F'd it up.

Advise needed.........this kit comes with a driver figure I don't plan on using. But there's no seat belt molded into the driver seat and no decal. I won't be buying any kind of photo etched arrangement due to expense. I see various decals sheets available but don't know what they'll look like on the model. What can you guys tell me? Thanks.

For cheapo belts you can use either electrical or masking tape cut into 1/8" or 2mm strips. Use a Sharpie to color the masking tape and a silver Sharpie for the buckles. Alternatively you can use aluminum foil duct tape for the buckles.

I agree with kurzheck's suggestion about using masking tape. I have done it several times and it works just fine. I like the fact that it has a textured surface rather than smooth. In addition it is obviously easy to apply and adjust. The silver sharpie is a god-send to get the buckles and other hardware to look sharp. Good luck. You sure seem to be on the right track. Jim

Not only are there no belts, Monogram didn't even give us a seat! Indycals decals are a good idea, but be advised that there is no latch assembly depicted! You could scratch-build something 3-D out of scrap plastic for the latch. Nice work so far, keep it up!

Heres the interior. Not sure why this kit has all the radiator & plumbing details because it looks like the side pod glues over top and so not visible.

You don't have to glue the sidepod down Jordan

I'm wanting to convert this Monogram Al Unser Jr. 88 Chevy March into the #20 Patrick Chevy March that Emerson Fittipaldi drove that same year. First thing I see is the rear cover has flip-up winglets in front of the rear wheels. Photos I see of #20 didn't have these. In order to make a reasonable facsimile, I feel like I have to cut and remove the black sections: Now the cover sides panels present a problem because of the arc doesn't match the new cut profile of the cover. I soaked a few seconds in boiling water and reshaped the arc. Here's the side panels glued on and with putty to fill in the back dip. Here's where I'm at today. Let the white dry a few days and then try to mask & paint the orange.

Looks good! The Mac Tools car was the first kit I built getting back into the hobby. Looks like you've got some good references too.
