Hey everyone! I'm trying to determine the interior colors of the Lotus 29's that ran at Indy in 1963 and Marshman's car in 1964. I've looked thru all the reference material I have and still have some questions I hope some of you know the answer to. In MRRN Old Calhoun says that the instrument dash and steering wheel were red on Clark's car. Steering wheel black on Gurney's car. It appears that the panels inside the cockpit would be a color like engine gray. I'm basing this on black and white photos and a color photo of a restored Lotus 29 at the Barber Motorsports museum. These would be my best guesses for 1963. I don't have much information from '64 at all. Hoping some of you can help. I've been cleaning parts on an AMT Lotus and hope to start painting these soon. Thanks! Tim

Hello Tim;
Maybe I can answer that, via Bob Clidinst. All Lotus' that ran at Indianapolis had red dashes.....even Marshman's. The sides were natural metal....or grey. But the sides were fuel cells and Colin Chapman was a cheap SOB, so more than likely natural metal. The floor was the same color as the side walls and most of the seats were black, head rests were red. If you have any other questions, just ask and I'll see what I can do!
Best to you...
Russ

Hello Russ! Thanks for the reply. I think that the interior of Clark's Lotus is something other than natural metal. At least from the black and white photos I have. I've been looking at two books, the one on Team Lotus by Andrew Ferguson, the other Indy's Wildest Decade. The side panels do not appear natural metal but I don't think they are red. The color photo of a restored 29 at the Barber Motorsports Museum shows them gray. I usually do not trust a lot of restorations but given a lack of other evidence I might have to. Thanks for the note about the exhaust pipes. I would have never guessed that on my own! Maybe in a few weeks I'll actually be able to post a photo of a finished model! Tim

The interior of all Indy Lotus cars that I have been around is gray, almost like a light gray primer color only gloss. This is true for the 29,34,38 & 56. I am positive that this was the color used on the Indy cars.

Krylon (I think) has a Pewter Gray that looks close.

Thanks! Tim Check out this thread on The Nostalgia Forum, it has color pictures of the cockpits on the Lotus 25 and 39, exactly contemporaneous with the Indy Lotus 29 and 34. You'll have to dig through it, but its' an interesting thread. forums.autosport.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=103034

Hey Eagle 36 and eveyone else!
Thanks a million. That thread from Eagle 36 has some really nice color shots that I am sure are the correct colors. To me it looks like engine gray for the interior and roll bar with the red dash as "old calhoun" says along with a black seat. Thanks again everyone! Today was a "holy" day as I spent most of today drilling out exhaust pipes and weber carbs. I've decided to replace some of the suspension components and the steering arms with pieces a little more scale like. I'll post some photos if I can ever remember where I put the cord to download from camera to the computer. Unless I can get my daughter to let me use her laptop!
Have a great day!
Tim ;D
