Happy Birthday Alessandro!!
Was fortunate enough to be walking behind the pits on Carb Day and stumbled into a few folks standing around a covered race car. In a few minutes Alex and the the Chipster walked out with the crew and it was obvious something good was happening. So I got to be up front when Chip presented the "The Pass" car to Alex. Lots of emotion.
What a simply wonderful guy. It was great to see how happy he was for his good friend TK.

To this day I think it was a bogus move. Yes, he was past Herta when he cut the chicane but Herta stayed on track and had to actually slow to avoid hitting him in th rear. Had Herta closed the door which he almost did, both cars would have been taken out. Then we might be calling it "The crash" instead. I never thought "The Pass" should have stood IMO.
Stu
I agree that the Zanardi book is a great read however.

To this day I think it was a bogus move... I never thought "The Pass" should have stood IMO. It may not be the popular view here but I always thought it was illegal, also. I could not believe CART let that stand pass and I was clearly yelling through the TV at them to invalidate it, too. Jordan

It has always been "you cannot leave the racing surface in order to improve your position". Why this was allowed says a lot about Chip's relationship with the CART leadership. Racing at all levels has always been very political. USAC may have been the worst, but all series are guilty. Take Care Craig

Craig - If I remember correctly, CART said that Zanardi was already passed Herta so when he cut the chicane, he was already in the lead. In other words, he left the track in the lead and you can't improve your position if you are already leading. No penalty.
I just didn't buy it.

I think you are correct, Stu. However Zanardi could not have made that pass and stayed on the track. One of things that really pi**es me off is when somebody follows the rules and gets screwed. It happens more and more often, seems that cheating is OK as long as you don't get caught. I will get off the soapbox now. Take Care Craig

I seem to remember that in F1 Shuie made a few passes slightly over the course line. But then, this is really about remembering the birthday of a remarkable gentleman and racer, isn't it?

As I see it, opinions can vary. Controversy fuels debate. But that is how stories and legends are born. Alex blessed us with a LOT of stories in those years he drove in CART and regardless of how you feel about "The Pass" it still has a high entertainment value. I still look up to Alex for what he has accomplished, even if he is short two appendages that nature gave him. But hey, it kind of figures given that I grew up watching "The Six Million Dollar Man". Happy belated Birthday Alex!
