Just announced! I'm happy. God move to enhance things up a bit. I'm sure the traditionalists and overly critical "fans" will have a field day! Whatever you do don't visit trackforum! lol I smell a bloodbath brewing over there.

I'm not sure holding a road race on the opening weekend is a good idea, but I'm all for anything that could help Indycar. I think it would perhaps have been a better idea to try and get one of the IMSA series races.

I think any race you hold at IMS that is not the 500 will give SOMEONE a reason not to go to the 500.

I am looking forward to this. I do not get to venture out very far these days. With kids in college and private schools there is little money left for my addiction (die cast cars). The only two road races I have ever been to is Mid Ohio and Cleveland. I think it will add a little more excitement to the month. Hell or high water I am not going to miss the opener on this one. Plus we have the 30 days of May back.

Call me a traditionalist but I wish they wouldn't do it. I'll probably watch it but if feels wrong.

Hmm, I'm kind of a traditionalist about Indy, but willing to give it a shot. I was a guy that loved the rear engined cars, the Hurst Sidecar, the Turbines, so I guess I like things that shake up the status quo.
But: If I go back to Indy again next May, it will be for the 500, not the road race.

I will embrace it. For me, it's another chance to visit IMS. Isn't that what those of us on this panel live for to varying degrees? I remember a guy in the 70s saying that if they held ANY event at IMS, he would come, just to be at IMS. Please consider that Indy has evolved from tar/gravel to bricks to then asphalt with and without an apron, two seaters with riding mechanics, to single seaters to all manner of upright and roadster cars, to rear engines, turbines, English made spec cars with turbos and on and on. The only constant in life is change. What date can we all agree on to freeze everything in time and henceforth never deviate from that?!?! I hope IMS throws the gates open, charges one general admission price and gets 100K local fans. They will eat, drink and buy souvenirs. Don't blow this guys (Mark Miles and company).

Since I live close by, I should embrace the move. But IMO this event will just dilute the already battered traditions of May. I have no confidence at all that IMS will just open the gates either. That would make too much sense. I think AJ was spot on about this event. Hold it later in the summer.
