Anyone have one of the Protar 1/24 scale Mercedes W196 kits? Ii found a few online but they had no information. Are they plastic? Do they have engines, wire wheels? At the price, I am afraid to buy one if it is not very accurate or detailed. Any information would be appreciated.

I finally got my post to clear! Allow me to add that the PROTAR kit included a piece of fine wire mesh for the grill (looked like a piece of auto' transmission filter screen to me) and a clear plastic windscreen. It's anice kit. Wish I had more time to build some of these!

Thank you alterrenner. Sounds like I need to buy the one I found. The Silver Arrows were some awesome race cars.

Sorry Bill that it has taken me so long to check out the MRRN article by John Johnson. John was a stickler for accuracy and his article shows the Protar model to be inaccurate in most dimensions. In fact John points out that the only dimension correct is the wheel base and at that only for the long wheelbase car! The body is 1/4" too thin in body height and the nose poorly shapen. The tires are all wrong and are, in fact, the fronts from their GTO kit. John said his o'all rating was low. It seems there lot's of problems for an accurate build. The article is in MRRN #9. Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks Patrick, most appreciated. I had decided that I already had enough irons in the fire and I shouldn't invest in the W196 kit. I've been trying, with very limited success, to get some accurate wire wheels for a 300SLR, and that has both frustrated the heck out of me and cost me a small fortune. I have 2 wheels that are very close and 2 more on order, so perhaps I can finally get that one wrapped up. The wheels are pretty much the same on as on the W196, so I really want to avoid that quest again! I guess the good news is that I now have some nice PE wires for my 250 GTO Thanks again, you're most kind.
