I saw this STP sponsored car at the Laguna F5000 races in 1972? I made this car over 20 years ago and won an award for it... Both started as a Roxy Toys Hong Kong friction racer and was intended to be slapped together as fast as I could...nope... I used Calvin's tire set and Tamiya's STP day-glo paint(wonderful to work with!)... the engine came from my favorite source, Monogram's sprinter kit... Rasputin's Hewland was excellent to work with and I added the aluminum tubing water lines... then problems started with the glues not holding tight. So I set it aside... While not entirely accurate it is close. More later... Patrick

The rear wing reminds me of the Eagle wing Indycals just did in 3D.
The 70s didn't always bring us the most aesthetically beautiful machines but I love to see the various ways designer try to keep up with all of the aero tricks people were coming up with at the time. Hopefully, you can overcome your glue issue with minimal fuss and backtracking.

Graham is a personal friend of mine. He has had some mental health problems lately. In his day he was a hell of a driver. I haven't talked to him in awhile so not sure of his current status. I believe he is back in NZ.

I really sorry he has had some problems. A very nice guy to chat with and a fine driver. I'd like to do an MR2-Chevy, not as successful, but a nice looker.

This rascal wants to fight me at every turn...now the nose won't fit correctly and the canard wings are set too far back! I'll have to re-paint the nose today...The rear wing struts are coming along nicely, however... The rear wing will be adjusted further forward when glued in place. On with the struggle! Patrick

I'll have to re-paint the nose Take note that Tamiya flo red doesn't necessary come out the same shade as what you painted before. Tamiya flo is the most inconstant paint out of the Tamiya sprays brands.

Patrick, your F5000s are outstanding. I'll second your comment about Tamiya Flo being unstable/unpredictable. What other brands have you guys had good luck with?

That's so cool Patrick. You do some crazy things with those toys. I really really loved the F5000 cars. Saw them at Long Beach, Riverside, Ontario (Questor) and Road America. I am very excited about Kevin K's upcoming Lola, one of the coolest looking F5000s ever.
Also, I was at the hobby store in Petaluma this last weekend and was surprised to see a lovely Sunoco McLaren F1 in the display case. Wasn't surprised to see who maded it!

MJ It was a way of introduction to my new Hobby Shop (I now live in Sonoma, CA) and the IPMS group that inhabits the area. Thanks to all for your appreciation of this beast's struggle to be born. By the way...does anyone know where I can get scoops like the one I have used on this F5000 car? Kevin? Patrick

Well, thanks to the heads up from Calvin, the nose came out very close to the original color. Just a gnat's hair lighter, but close enough. I'm sure the photos won't show it. The fit is still not that great, but... I need to re-apply the trailing links and spark plug wires still. Phew! For a fast build this was a struggle to get done. Patrick

Once again you have worked magic with this project. Not a very pretty car, but you've done an amazing job on a unique car.
