Never been a fan of the Rolex series but my buddies and I were curious to watch some sports cars at IMS. Had a good time at the Rolex Grand Am despite a small crowd. Good racing in both classes. Took some nice pictures and was impressed with the paddock passes and accessibility. Looking forward to the addition of the American LeMans cars next season. IMS should seriously look to expand that race more than 3 hours.
As for NASCAR? Zzzz... Less than 100,000 today at the Speedway. The local media tried to spin it well but those empty seats spoke for themselves. Two cars dominated and the rest were decoration. There was never a pass for a lead change the whole race. I get about as much satisfaction watching a Norfolk and Southern freight train go by than watching that crap. Putting up lights will not help that race. About the only thing that might{and that is a big MIGHT)is adding to the bottom apron of the track. IMS is a one groove race for those cars no matter what improvements are made to the cars.
I wonder what the future is of the Brickyard 400. It bores even the diehard NASCAR fan.

I hate to sound harsh but NASCAR wants to come in, suck the life and tradition out of IMS and apply to themselves. I really resent that. Even the casual fan sees right through this, which is one of several well documented reasons the crowd continues to diminish. I also despise what they did to Raceway Park, moving the trucks and Nationwide from this wonderful venue, killing their best racing week (US Nationals aside). From an insider point of view, it is a little known fact that, when Indycar gets a sponsor, their phones begin ringing off the hook, NASCAR marketers trying to poach them. It's happened countless times. It's a lot like the political climate today. While the Saudis smile and make nice on the surface, they are not really our friends.

I guess they could put lights up and race on the infield Road Course. Basically for me the worst part of watching the Brickyard 400 is my dad poking fun at me about the stockcars contaminating the historic grown of IMS! I like Nascar but....you know....the political and denial stuff they do now a days gets old.....you know... I also love those magical debris cations when things are a little..... I'm just glad Jimmie Johnson didn't win yesterday, because you know how nascar would of spun that stat! "JIMMIE JOHNSON THE GREATEST EVER TO RACE AT INDY! - A FIVE TIME WINNER!" Then nascar would go off and start comparing Jimmie to Foyt, Unser and Mears! Which really PO's me!

To me the silliest thing NASCAR has brought to the Speedway is this photo op of the winner kissing the bricks. Can anyone here really imagine A J Foyt getting down on his hands and knees kissing the bricks?!

I think what the Brickyard 400 needs it apron which I think would also be great for the 500.

I think a bigger apron for Indy cars might be a bit dicey for the angles of impact in the turns. Could be wrong. I just wish IMS would tell NASCAR to just deal with the track and be done with it. It is a flat track---just deal with it.

Okay I'm starting to get silly...... time to go work on my models and be more productive....

I had to turn off the prerace because I got tired of the Johnson/Gordon winning 5 talk. Doing burnouts on the bricks is sac religious.

This year I had knee surgery and had to watch the 500 from my friends couch. I got an endless amount of crap from him at the end with him saying "Why doesn't Indycar have the Green White Checker?" I said because Indycar doesn't have to fabricate it's finishes with two, three or even four chances. It is what it is.
While I would have loved for the 500 to have finished under green, I don't for a second want them to change it. It's the Indy 500 not the Indy 502.5 or the Daytona 502,503 or 504.
I also can't stand the gimmicks like the "Lucky Dog Award" or the "Chase". I used to watch NASCRAP and Jeff Gordon was my favorite. I mean if they didn't have this "Chase" thing, Gordo would have two maybe three more Championships!
To me, the finish should be the finish. It's real life.

I was so excited about the 400 being in my backyard that I left town. Helped a buddy run his F2000 car at an SCCA event in Grattan. Best BY400 ever for me, no traffic or anything. haha

I got to thinking that I shouldn't have called NASCAR, NASCRAP. We should all be able to state our opinion on something without saying it in a way that might offend others. I got to thinking and realized that in the past, this is how some bad feelings got started.
No one called me out on this or complained.
Being a moderator I am supposed to police stuff like this. Not say it myself!
My apollogies if I offended anyone.

Maybe not Calvin but it's the point. Just don't want to be "that guy". Plus, no reason or excuse for it.
Let's just have fun! Game on!

Someone please send me $.02... I know that my point of view is limited, but using my sons as examples, I believe the "great days of Nascar" are ending. Yes, the Daytona 500 and others will still be big, but the "I watch every race" is fading. 5 times with the same champ;G/W/Checkers, and "I just watch the last 5 minutes" is beginning to seem like "sports entertainment."Both sons have taken grief because they don't follow Nascar but after Indy and Pocono, Nascar buddies were amazed at the speed and exciting racing. I'm NOT being "pie in the sky." Indy car has "a long row to hoe" before it can challenge Nascar, but the future is always changing and new, younger fans will decide it... (Steps off soapbox and shuts up) Tim Tim, It't the same with Formula 1. First they banned everything that was a little different then others had on their car, like wings and other stuff. From V12, next year back to V6 engines. Also because the cars can't pass each other anymore they invented DRS and KERS. And now a tyre company makes extra fast degrading tyres for more 'excitement'. It has nothing to do with racing anymore. In the early days I started watching around '93 it was fun, a lot competitors and crashing cars. Now i don't even stay at home on race day sometimes, the excitement is far from the track.

I don't think that Indycar needs to take a backseat to anyone when it comes to "gimmick" racing. Granted we don't have "green, white, checker", "lucky dog" or "the chase", but we do have red and black tires, push to block, and the wave around. At indy we don't need DRS, the leader is a sitting duck. I think that only one pass for the lead is no worse than the 65 or so we had at the 500. The sad fact is that all racing series have gone after the "hip, young" fans, and have been quite willing to dump the established fans to get them. IMO this has been a mistake and now they all are paying the price. Again IMO, racing will never overtake Football, Basketball, and Baseball, and everyone needs to accept that fact. The problem at Indy is not the track, it's the cars. Indy has become a 1 lane track because of aero and tire technology. I have said for years that we need flat bottom cars, and harder tires, but that's just my opinion. All series have a tough job. we, on this board can't agree on what makes good racing, how can we expect them to do it? At any level, spec racing sucks. My $.02 Craig

Does anyone remember Carl Edward's comment last year about NASCAR being artificial racing? It didn't get the publicity it should have and it seems it was hushed up in record time. When the drivers make comments like this, you know something's wrong. Craig, you pretty much nailed it.

I guess I'm one of the oddballs. I like Nascar racing. I love all types of racing, but I perfer it to Indycar or Forumula 1. All the different racing series have their ups and downs, but I just find Nascar racing exciting. I get tired of hearing about "5 Time" and wouldn't miss him if he dropped dead, but then there are guys like Smoke and Kyle Busch. (they remind me so much of AJ) I was at the Brickyard race Sunday, and while not a great race, I enjoyed it. In my opinion, the real gem that IMS has is the Rolex race. I was also at that race on Friday, and THAT is exciting racing. There is a rumor that it may get its own race weekend next year. God, I hope so. I also hope the rumor about lighting IMS is true. All they would really need to light is the front straight. A 6, 12, or even a 24 hour race at IMS would be absolutly amazing. Can you imagine a 24 hour race with a carnival across the street, ala Le Mans? Of course, how do you keep out the riff-raff? I guess they could get rid of that stupid golf course and put the carnival in the infield.

WHEN NASCAR MAKES THEIR RACE A 500 MILE EVENT, THEN THEY CAN TALK ABOUT A 5-TIME WINNER. THE LAST 100 MILES AT THE INDY 500 HAS MADE A LOT OF DIFFERENCE FOR MARIO, AJ. AND A LIST OF OTHER NEAR WINNERS.

It will even be better with ALS boys with them next year(IMO a much better product than Grand Am). Me thinks you were in the minority of happy fans that watched the BY but what was amazing was that the TV ratings were up.

The BY400 used to be the 2nd biggest race on the nascar schedule after the daytona 500, but the crowd Sunday showed that even a big race like that cannot draw the crowds of years gone by. Interesting the talk of Indy being a one groove race track for the cup cars, it's always been a one groove race track since they've been racing there since 1994. I don't think the track, or degree of banking is the issue, ever since Nascar went to the COT and then this Gen 6 car, they've lost so many fans, myself included, It was in my opinion in the 90s and early 2000s the best racing series on the planet, close, tight racing, now its prossessional. I tried to watch the Daytona 500 in feb, but it was so boring, long gone are the days of spending a sunday afternoon on the couch watching a cup race, I have better things to do.
