I am building a SMTS 1/43 kit as the Lotus 38 that Dan Gurney drove at Milwaukee in a pair of races in 1965; the car was #15 at Milwaukee race 1 and #28 at the second race. I think it was chassis 38/3, the same car that Dan raced at Indy with Yamaha backing.
I have found some black and white photos and some color movies footage of the car from Milwaukee and it is definitely blue, but I cannot tell which shade of blue. In some images it seems a light blue, like the light Viking blue on the Cobra Daytona coupes and in others it looks darker, like the blue of Dan's 1966 Sebring GT40 MkII. It does not seem as dark as the Guardsman Blue of the Shelby cars.
I am trying to do a match with either Tamiya or ModelMaster paints (I am a rattle can painter). The TS-54 Light Metallic blue that I have tried seems too dark so I am expecting to strip and respray; the photos I have seen of TS-58 Pearl Light Blue seem too light (close to Viking blue). Testors Arctic blue is too dark as well.
Does anyone have any color photos to help in making a match? Or any suggestions of what paint would be a better match? Thanks.
