Okay, so I agree that we could use more WIPs around here so here's a peek at my current project. Background of this one is this is my buddy build with Matt T aka Excalibur on here. Started out at a TK 99 McD's car then switched to be Bryan Herta's Laguna Seca winner. I've thought about doing the '99 car since Matt is doing the teammate car of Max Papis but I think I am going to stick with 1998. Went to unpack a box looking for some Herta decals and actually found an instruction sheet with dozens of notes I'd made when researching this car years ago. It was a very nice find. It had stuff I'd missed this time around and I found a few things I had wrong back then - together old me and new me have a pretty good grasp on detailing this one I think Not much to show today but I put grey Tamiya putty the helmet, turbo inlet, and rear brake ducts last night then sanded them down today and was pretty happy. Pulled out the white putty tonight to do the inside edges of the rear brake ducts and fix one spot on the helmet. Probably too much work on parts no one will see but it is just how I build and explains why I build slow and never seem to finish anything Anyone know what helmet comes in the Reynard kit? Jordan

I also respect your build techniques. I sometimes burn myself out on details others would pass on. This makes my building pace painfully slow and leads to several unfinished projects laying around at any given time. It also provides Calvin with ammunition to torment me to death about doing a WIP! :-)

That is one of the things I enjoy about this board, we all have our own styles and methods. Take Care Craig

Thanks guys for the encouragement. Still a lot I want to do but I am still making progress which is what I need - traction! Again, the buddy build with Matt has been a lot of help in keeping this one on the front burner. Hopefully the WIP will be of assistance to you guys who want to build Reynards and a way for you guys to give me some good feedback, tips, techniques, etc along the way, too. As far as decals, I intend to use the Revell sheet on this build but I have also done a little work in CorelDraw to pull together a few missing logos to make a more accurate build of the '98 Laguna Seca winner. Anyone know what helmet comes in the Reynard kit? Jordan

Better. Got sick about two weeks ago and was left wondering if someone got the licence plate of the bus that hit me. Once I felt better, the wife and kiddo were sick. Have the day to myself and if this wasp that is loose in the house will leave me alone, I'll continue building at glacial pace Jordan

I know drivers get tagged as prima donnas but I think Herta's complaint of a headache might be justified. LOL The helmet in the kit is not generic but a great representation of the Simpson Shark which is very distinctive in design. More than a few guys ran this helmet (de Ferran, Moore, Pruett, PJ Jones, etc...) but a lot ran the Bell Dominator (Vasser, Zanardi, Herta, etc...) so I'm trying to see if I can get the helmet to look more like the Bell. What I have done is put a cut down the centerline of the top of the helmet and inserted some .020" sheet plastic. From here I am marking out the profile of the Bell on this plastic, sanding the plastic sheet down to the markings, building up the rest of the helmet with the Milliput, sanding it back to refine the shape, and touching up with Tamiya putty if necessary. Sorry for the blurry pic. Using the cell phone until I can find/buy a sync cable for the digital camera. Jordan

Reminds me of a 1930's hood ornament. Fair enough LOL Found this image on a Google search but it seemed a bit off I think it is getting closer to the 1:1 though Maybe a little more tweaking then I should probably leave it alone - I can always adjust up or down later. Jordan

Not trying to be negative, look at some of those high end 30's cars. Great detail, Jordan, I would have never thought of modifying a helmet. What do you thing is causing this, Calvin, glue, paint fumes. or resin dust? Take Care Craig

Wasn't sure how to take it before (tone is often so hard to infer from text) but appreciate the compliment. I've added another piece of plastic that extends the plane out from the top of the eye opening of the helmet. Oversized the piece of plastic on purpose like before and now just contouring back with sanding. Will work on it a bit more tonight. Updated pics after that is done. Jordan

Now that's an ornament!! Here's the helmet progress Chronological order L to R we have the stock helmet with the two vents above the eyes filled in, the helmet with the sheet plastic inserted in the cut down the centerline (approx), the sheet plastic contoured to more of a Bell profile, 2nd piece of sheet plastic on post contouring, and finally filling in the shape with milliput using the sheet plastic as a guide. Calling it good for the night. Jordan

Jordan As you know, I'm not shy about posting my opinions on this board. I will listen to and respect anyones views on any topic, but I expect the same in return. I believe we can disagree and remain friends. That being said, I will NEVER make a negative comment about anyones work, If anyone has ever taken it that way, I'm sorry, it was not my intent. I post here for the same reasom I build models, I enjoy it. OK, I'm done being serious. Take Care Craig

NP Craig, I wasn't sure how to take it but I did not take offense to it. Not much to show today, I did this while watching racing on the laptop so it was easy to get distracted LOL. If I get brave I might finish this up tonight. Maybe not.... need to do some yard work if I can after church. This is the back side of Scale Motorsports Hi-Def 1/24 (SKU #1525). Homemade patterns, we will have to see how good I did on this... Jordan

Decals are probably too old. They fractured when I tried to use them. Do you guys think coating them with clear will help them stay together? Won't make contouring them any easier but if I can salvage them, it would be at least preferable.

Do you guys think coating them with clear will help them stay together? Depends Won't make contouring them any easier....... Only if the clear is no more than 2 hrs old. When ever I make my own painted decals (see my 1996 winner - dayglo yellow) it has to be with the paint still very fresh in order for it to contour. As the years go on the Revell decals are finally showing their age.....

As the years go on the Revell decals are finally showing their age..... Haven't gotten to the Revell decals yet. I have three sheets handy so hopefully they will not be too bad of an issue. I'll cross that bridge if/when I get there. Need to cross this bridge of the SMS decal issue at the moment. Jordan
