Thanks for sharing those eye opening photos. You have made me completely rethink the appearance of these cars on race day. Your picture showing the white decal is distorted, could it be an Autolite decal? Looking at the pictures of these cars at Milwaukee shows an exact same size round white Autolite decal in this same spot. It has the same broad white circle with the blue four pointed star on a red circle in the middle. Also, when you look at the Milwaukee photos, look at the Perfect Circle decal next to the Autolite. See how it is underneath where the windscreen begins? If you go to Fordimages.com and type 0200-1887 in the search bar, a picture of Jim Clark standing in the 29 in the Indianapolis pit road comes up. If you click on it and click magnify, you can see at the bottom of the picture a Perfect Circle decal on the right side of the car that is underneath where the windscreen begins. The exact same spot as in Milwaukee. Jim has grime on his face, his helmet is painted blue with a white visor, his gas tank lid is not taped off, the grandstands are at capacity and it is a sunny day. Oddly, there are no other cars in pit road. Is this picture from race day?

It looks like an Autolite spark plug decal, but...

I found this photo somewhere online over a year ago. I assumed it was in Milwaukee because of the firebird decal but it bothered me that the car was on Firestone tires. The Lotus effort raced and won at Milwaukee on Dunlops. I realized today that the garage bay is actually from Gasoline Alley. You can see the Autolite decal and the Perfect Circle shown. Let me know if I am wrong. Tom

It's like that on every frame in that sequence. But my thought is Autolite as well (quoting Patrick) but....

Not sure how you can tell the helmet is blue in that shot, it looks pretty obstructed to me... but his qualifying photo definitely shows the gas cap tapped over and a silver helmet, so my guess is the photo in question is post-race. That does look like oil from Parnelli's car on his face ;-)

That does look like oil from Parnelli's car on his face ;-) Sorry, I should explain the helmet color. Jim Clark's helmet color of choice was dark blue. When he came to race at Indy with his blue F1 helmet, he was told it did not meet the specifications required to be used at the raceway. That is why he has a silver bell helmet with a white visor for qualifying and most of the practice. In the book Team Lotus, The Indianapolis Years, it is pointed out the Bell helmet was painted dark blue in time for the race. When I saw the helmet in the photo was a dark color (not silver) my previous knowledge swayed me to claim it was blue. Tom

That picture is from a old book that I had as a kid. I believe I got it at the Speedway Museum whenit was on the corner of 16th and Georgetown.
