I'm getting ready to wade in on the 72 winner. What shade of blue would be correct? I'm thinking just a regular blue over a white primer to keep it bright as opposed to blue over grey, which might make it to dark. Thanks.

Hey guy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a bit of a nerd with this stuff....I have Bill Jorgensen's 72 Conversion kit and I was going to build it and went looking for the proper color.........I found it in an enamel paint. Humbrol makes a color called "Lufthansa Blue'...which very close to Sunoco Blue....It's a deep blue with a slight touch of violet...and the best match I have found so far. Model Car World maybe your best bet in laquer......Hope this helps.
Best to you
Russ

I've used Testors Blue Angel Blue. It might be a touch dark, but I think it turned out OK. (Though now that I think about it, I think I put in a couple drops of lighter blue to brighten it up a bit.)

Yeah, Macsparty, that's a great loking build of what appears to be a stock AMT McLaren! A little nose work and they can look OK for certain cars & that's definitely one of them. Nice job!

Hey Jordan, good digging!
It's all true. I guess I thought I had posted that one on here before. I think the only scratch bit on it, and I feel bad I don't even know what they are called, are the two bits on the top of the wing. They're just little strips of styrene on top of the resin wing. Everything else is from the AMT Hiss kit. Except, of course as note, the most excellent Indycals.

Thank you gentlemen. That's why I love this forum. Where else could a simple question about a shade of blue lead to such great feedback.

There is a spray can color at Wally World in the Color Place line called Royal Blue. It isn't 100% totally correct, but I used it on a Penske Sunoco '66 'vette and it is very, very close. I believe that with the lack of extensive body panels on the Indy car, the color would look even closer.
Russ calls out the Humbrol paint and if you can get that, it is really great paint. There is also a site (I didn't book mark it) that has the mixing ratios for many Indy car, and other racing, colors using Tamiya, etc..

An update: There is a fellow, Jameson Kroon IIRC, who has a model paint supply called Scalefinishes. He mixes from factory codes and carries Sunoco Blue. I just got a 2 oz. bottle for $10 which includes shipping. I have used a couple of his colors and they are very nice. They are two stage so you do have to clear coat, but the coverage and matching are perfect. Scalefinishes.com scalefinishes.com/welcome.htmlMongo

For those of you who use Tamiya spray paints, I would use TS15 Blue.

For those of you who use Tamiya spray paints, I would use TS15 Blue. Hi Michael, I would definitely use more Tamiya if it were available anywhere nearby. Mongo
