OKAY...Gregg started this thread, so blame him1
what is the best and worst Indy Car Model of all-time buy a major kit maker. Leave the cottage industry guys alone this time. We all agree the mid 1970's McLaren sucks! But, we also love it and what it can become with a little work. Although the McLaren was bad....the mid 1970's Eagle was worse! Not an angle or line on it was correct at all. It is good for spare parts to build on of Jorgensen's eagles, which is much better and correct in many of it's dimensions. But I said leave the cottage industry guys alone...this time.
My vote for the worst is the in the late 1980's Monogram Indy kits...any one of them. The same chassis and same engine made then useless to me except for spare parts. Also, as side mention...the old Aurora/Best Fuel Injection Special...What a pig!!!!! Even for it's time!
My vote fore the best, and yes, it's out of scale in many places...is the Good old AMT Watson Roadster. Now with Lance Seller's conversion kit, can be made accurately. Many of us cut our teeth on this kit. You always needed better decals, for they always sucked! But the basic kit is good even though the engine is way too small.
Best to you
Russ
P.S. - Next time, well add the cottage industry guys

You're blaming ME for starting this thread? Moi? I will respond even if it wasn't me just because these threads are so much fun.
I hate those Monograms also, but I have to say that the engine detail is far better than the AMT kits. The problems I have with them are probably the same as everyone else: Hard to paint with those stupid side pods (or as my daughter calls them, I-pods), that make them hard to paint right, the decals aren't great quality and the suspension doesn't stay together. I haven't had the pleasure of building those old Eagles. I'd really like to try one and see what everyone is complaining about. Then my own frustration level will be put to the test.

Probably agree with everyone that the Monogram were the worst. I have only built one........
I love the AMT Watson, also! How about the Monogram Kurtis??

My vote for the best would be the MPC Rislone/Olsonite Eagle. Not perfect but was one of (if not the) first 1/25 Indy cars Ibuilt as a kid, MPC decals and all, came out very nice. The Offy is probably the best ever done in plastic. For worst I have to go with the Monogram '90's kits. The AMT's can at least be built curbside and look fairly good (& are 1/25 scale!). Sorry Mongo, but altho the Mono Kurtis is very simplified, it does go together easily and looks pretty good without a lot of extra work. Just my opinion!

The AMT Lotus are okay....When you check it next to Bob Clidinst's drawings it's more close to being accurate than you would think. Good things can be done with that kit.
As for resin kits, I said at the beginning of the thread we'll get to those later, but I agree...Lance and Bill both, do nice work.
In regards to the Carousel 1 diecast.....Diecast are for collectors, not modelers....If you just want something to put on a shelf and not have any money...go to it. I have very few Carousel 1 products for good reason....Most of them SUCK! The Watson's are very poor with undersized tires and no changes to the body from car to car. Most have been given to me. I'd rather take the time and build an accurate 1/25 scale model and spend the money on other supplies to build kits. For the money, I'd rather buy one of the current cottage industry guys kits. It's a better value!
Best to you

Pick any one of the Aurora kits....your choice....and I'll agree with you. YUK, YUK, and YUK. The only reason I bought them was for the box art.

Regarding the AMT Lotus, a guy on e-Bay sells a vac-formed windscreen to replace the 5-scale-inch-thick one. It looks like it would improve the cockpit opening quite a bit. When I find him again I'll post a link.

Nobody ever seems to mention the IMC Lotus. Not the '65 winner, but the '63 version of the Lotus 29. The cockpit opening is MUCH closer to correct although the suspension blows...And that engine blob, well..........

You hit the nail on the head!!!!!!!!!
All you really need is a vac-formed wind screen to make it look a great deal better....The kit "windscreen" is like 4 inches thick in scale...and it is bad. CHECK IT AGAINST BOB CLIDINST'S DRAWINGS!!!....It's more accurate than you think! The engine is a great deal better than the IMC kit...The IMC kit is awful, almost worthy of being an old Aurora kit. Nice tires, bad kit
Best to you

Mr.Indy... I totally agree....The old Aurora kits are mostly collectors pieces now. Some are just God Awful! Like the 1953 Fuel Injection Special and the 1940 Maserati.....I call them "Gummy bear" models because they kind of look like the car....but....They suck!
Now the earlier cars they did...The Murphy Special, and Miller aren't too bad.....the Gilmore 1935 Winner things can be done with, but forget an out of the box build. Major rework needs to be done, kind of like Pamela Anderson. Lost of plastic and don't ask....It'll look nice from a distance.
Best to you

Brian Hi Brian, I was saying that I felt the Monogram Kurtis is one of the better kits. It builds decent curbside right out of the box, and can be modified real easy. ;D I really like them! Mongo

I guess it's safe to say there is not a perfect plastic kit out there. But, where would we be without them? I'd never be able to build a resin kit if I hadn't built several plastic ones first. And I don't feel nearly so bad if I screw up a $10 AMT kit as I would a resin kit. And who here wouldn't, if one of the big companies were to release an '09 Dallara this summer, go out and buy about 33 of them, regardless of accuracy? So if I had to pick a favorite, I actually think it might be the AMT PC-6, if for no other reason than that was the first one I built as a kid. I still hate the tires, but oh well. I can still live with most of the other errors I know about now. (And to think about making a PC-7!) Least favorite, probably the McLaren. Love the car, and I've built several, but even from the beginning (aside from the tires!) I didn't think those front wings could be right. And now the more I learn, the more I try to fix, which just makes them kind of a pain.

Ziggy - Oh, I've got several, and built a few now. They are great. It's just that there's no way I would have been able to do one if one had been my first kit.
