Since when did IMS rely on legislation to fund improvements?
I just hope to hell that lights doesn't mean a future night-time Indy 500.

Many times I've been told by reliable sources that IMS had requested quotes on installing lights. Looks like they are finally moving forward. I doubt a night time Indy 500 is in the cards. BUT, I can see a rain delay causing it to be finished or pushed into the night.
I think its more likely to be a night Brickyard 400 to get out of the heat. Or even more likely, a 12 or 24 hour endurance race. I've always thought a 10-10 or 11-11 race would be just about right and end early enough to keep the neighbors from complaining.....too much.

I'm with Michael. I thought they were always so proud about never asking for tax payer money.

I hope that is really not going to happen. IMS has abandoned so much tradition over the last 10 years that a night race would just about do it. Jim

Things like this are what made me cut off my plastic and resin kit collecting a while back at 1980. I've really lost interest in the whole Indy "spectacle". Once the teams lost the ability to innovate and experiment, it just wasn't the same. A night race, really?

Tax payers should not have to pay for this, this is one instance that I'm glad I don't live in Indiana. Here in Cincinnati the city stills owes money on Riverfront Stadium and it was torn down 10 years ago. Still owe tons on Paul Brown & The Reds stadium too. Sports franchises are out of control on their demands. After all the speedway can't move to another city like the Browns (Ravens) did.
Let the Hulman's pay for this as they always have.

I doubt the 500 would go nights. I would be up for some endurance racing though.
The Rolex 24 Hours of Indianapolis? Where's the ticket line?

There are some neighborhoods near the Speedway that I wouldn't feel comfortable being in after dark. I mention this because I usually park on a side street off of 16th street. I saw where the Hulmans would pay 2 million a year towards paying off the "loan". They probably make a ton in interest on the money they make on renewal ticket sales alone. 2 million is chump change to them. I think they want the public to pay for all the mandated changes they have to make to meet federal guidelines on several issues.

I appreciate and respect everyone's opinions. I believe it is being done for three reasons: First and foremost, to improve sightlines ruined by remodeling catering to NASCAR and F1; Second, to move the Brickyard 400 to the evening in hopes of escaping the heat and improving attendance and lastly to open the door for endurance racing.
No one appreciates traditions more than I but the only thing constant in the history of IMS is change. We all grew up in different eras and have our own idea of what is normal. Change is normal. It's everywhere.
