Does anybody have more info on the large bulge that was added to the left side of several 1956 entrants. I'm most interested in Bob Sweikert's D-A Lubricants car. Does Bob Clidinst have a drawing of this particular car? Thanks for any help!

I believe the bulge was merely a way to cover the external oil tank. The 'grille' work on the front side allowed cool air to pass through and cool the tank/oil.

Thanks everyone for the help. I was able to pick up two Monogram Kurtis Kraft kits for a very good price at the Toledo NNL. It was the Dirt track special boxing only there were two Kurtis-Krafts rather than a dirt track car which was fine with me. I was also able to pick up the Fred Cady D-A Lubricants sheet as well. I'd like to do the Filter Queen Special but have heard horror stories about the decal sheet. I'm planning to do the Cal Niday 1955 entry and the Bob Sweikert '56 entry. Thanks again Russ for your help. Tim

The 1956 D-A car was not a Kurtis Kraft , It was one of 4 new car built by Eddie Kuzma , they were the #1 D-A car the #88 Schmidt car with Johnny Thomson driving ,In 1958 & 59Eddie Sachs the #98 Agajanian driven by Johnnie Parsons, sister car were the Dean Van Line Spl.driven by Jimmy Bryan and in 1958 A.J. Foyt ,another D-A car #10 in 1957 driven by Johnny Thomson, these Kuzma car are narrower than the Kurtis Kraft car. and some didn't have headrest, the Dean Van Line Spl. is the car Jimmy Bryan won the 1957 Race of Two World in Monza. I have built 3 Filter Queen Spl. with only minor problems, take your time and it makes a nice looking model. the Mongran kit is a model of the 1954 Bardhal Spl. driven by Jim Rathmann in 1955 Spider Webb drove the #9 Walsh Spl.(the mongram kit) and 1956 Filter Queen Spl. by Rodger Ward.

Thanks very much for the information. I did not realize that Sweikert's 1956 ride was a Kuzma built chassis. I'm hoping to get a 1956 Clymer Indy yearbook sometime soon. It sometimes seems very hard to track down exact chassis ID so again I appreciate the help. Tim

It's interesting to note that in 1956 Sweikert, the defending champion, was felled by a tire problem, losing a right rear. Fifty years later, Dan Wheldon, the defending champion, cut a tire and could not repeat.

"I love stories like that. Indy giveth, and Indy taketh away"
the ultimate to that would be bill vukovich. heartbreaking loss in '52, wins in '53 & '54, then is killed while leading in "55. he was the man! duane
