That's either frosted detail or frosted ultra detail - same material I have selected for my parts.

If someone ever gets a 3D printer, I've got models

So I have 1994 and 1995 Reynard, Penske and Lola 3D models in 3dsmax...so in theory I could send those 3d models to a 3d printer and have them 'made' to whatever scale I see fit (1/20, 1/25, 1/43) and sell them ? Or am I nuts ? I wouldn't do that, though. Marcelo would be pissed if people took his work and started doing this.

I understand what you are saying, one day I might do it myself for personal use; it is a rather grey area if you ask me; over 50hrs of work went into extracting the models to 3dsmax; and I have a feeling someone, somewhere will do it eventually.

If you didn't create it and don't have permission, don't print it.

gavkiwi -- those models were encrypted for a reason. the fact that you had to hack them should tell you they're not yours to do as you wish. I know you mean no malice, but he wanted them protected for reasons just like this.
contact Marcelo first, I'm certain he will work a deal with you. he's a damn good man.

Model Hiro, made from a 3d designed master, the future is here. I told ya so. Moore's law sez the price is going to plummet. Someday, very soon, you will be able to toss a few pictures into a scanner and a little piece of free software will convert them into patterns for a printer that can produce a finished model within minutes. Those of us with stacks of unbuilt models in our closets and/or garages will be so much history. pbh

At this resolution they almost look like ice sculptures. Rusty

Is the painted capsule painted directly over that surface, as-is?

The painted capsule is the orignal kit capsule, shown for comparison regarding it's lack of detail and accuracy.

Well, now I feel like an (expletive deleted)! I was concentrating so hard on the finish, I never looked at the escape tower, its glaringly obvious now! Anyway, how does the material look if painted as-is? Seems like it would be OK for engines and gearboxes.

Depending on what you are painting and what paints you are using, primer is probably a smart move. This second batch of parts came back very oily. When they are printed, they are surrounded in a supporting material which has to be washed away. Obviously this material is very oily. I had to soak the parts pretty good to remove the residue. In my first batch I brush painted the offy with metallic paints and that worked fine but it does come off easy (maybe because I didn't clean that first one good enough). For now I'm going to use the same rule of thumb I do with styrene: Metallics, no primer, everything else, primer.

Yeah, can't wait to see what these look like with grey primer on them. This has been a great discussion topic, thanks for taking us through this Michael.
Reminds me that I need to watch another tutorial video on Blender... later!!!

I love the tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tires are spectacular! Can they be made in a (somewhat) cost effective manner, or is the thought to use as a mold for resin?
I don't think I could afford 50 bucks for the 4 Eagles and 2 turbines I have, but there would absolutely be a market, especially at a lower price point. Everyone here would want at least a set or two.
Now, about some '70s slicks....
Thanks Michael! MJ

The tires are going to be produced in resin and will be much more cost effective than going through shapeways.
