This is a first time post for me. Here is an old Ampersand March 84C driven to victory by Al Jr. at the Portland 200 in 1984. I really liked this paint scheme and I always thought it was a great decade for open wheel racing in the US. So glad you posted it here (I was admiring it on AF earlier today) - great work on this one. Nice to see some 1/43 builds!

Lots of detail! At first I thought it was an Exoto 1/18 scale.

Excellent work!
The Indy 500 version of this car is on my "To Do" list. I am going to convert a 1/18th scale Rick Mears Carousel 1 March. Your build inspires me to move this project up a few notches on the list!
Awesome build!

I have been a 1/43 guy since the early 90's when I was a teenager with NASCAR Starter Kits, Onyx, Minichamps and Amerpsand and Tameo Indy Cars.. up to now with Revell, Formula Models and Spark.
I have told Gavin the same thing... 1/43 collecting is more expensive and worse than a cocaine addiction, RUN!!!!
lol
I juts logged on and your cars are STUNNING. They do look like 1/24 or 1/18ths from the photos. I am doing some Minichamps Lola conversions with Mike's decals but can't come close to your ability.
Thanks so much for sharing.
Did you see Spark is releasing from new Indy winners from the 60's too? I bought all three of the Wedge Turbines and love 'em! I was also crushed that Hobby Horse didn't continue with their line. The Roadsters were a nice price and I've considered some conversions there too but I just don't have time anymore it seems.

Thanks! Your right it is an addiction. I started building 1/43 in 1989 (Meri Benetton B187) and have been hooked ever since. I do build larger scale on occasion but always feel more comfortable with 1/43. I have more unbuilt kits than I can build. I did see that Sparks is releasing 60's winners. I like there stuff I have a couple of their current Audi R18 from Lemans. Thanks again for your compliments. I would like to see some of your conversions.

Yes, 1/43 is addictive, I ignored all the warnings and i still have yet to see how deep the rabbit hole is lol. Sure is fun though. I've got a small collection goin, if anyone here bought the '77 Foyt coyote precision miniatures on eBay last week for $49.9 I expect to see a wip here lol

Gavin, I didn't buy the one on Ebay, but I do have the PM 73 Wildcat, and Gatorade McLaren. They were really ahead of there time. I also have the IMRA 1975 Jorgenson Eagle that I'm almost afraid to build.

Welcome to the forum, acmiaz! I am a relative newcomer too, but I've been dabbling with 1/43rd's since the mid 70s. As you can probably tell from my username I was the guy who did the Ampersand models back in the 80s, and I must say that your build of the Coors car is absolutely great! I love the hoses on the brake ducts and the detailing you did in the cockpit. And to be honest it inspires me to finally build some 84C's for my own collection - frankly, after building a few hundred of the darn things for others I lost the spark for about 20 years, but I am ready to get going again. Thanks for the inspiration!

Bo, I'm honored that you took the time to comment on my build. Your line of kits still hold up today both in subject and quality. It's hard to believe its been that long since they were produced. I wish you were still producing them today. How many kits were in the line? I have 13 but I had to buy them from a friend who no longer can build 1/43. So far I have built two 84C's that are posted and two 85C's that I will post soon. I can see how you would want to take some time off after building that many cars especially the same subject. I'm really happy that my build possibly inspired you to get back into building some more 84C's. Please post them when you finish them. Thanks again for the compliment and Thank you for producing such a fine line of models.

I did five different masters: the March 84C, 85C Penske, 86C, 86C Penske and Lola T900. I had the masters built by pattern makers in England, but I actually started out by doing the masters myself. However, it takes forever for a non-craftsman like myself to engineer and sculpt the masters, so I still have an almost-finished master for the March 82C and an 83C that requires a bit more work. And to top it all off, I have begun reworking one of my T900 into the T800...! It will take a minor miracle for any of the projects to get finished, but with a little luck I'll get there someday.
You asked how many different versions I did, and it comes to about 20: 12 84Cs (Mears, Rahal, Unser Jr., Unser Sr., Brabham, Mi. Andretti, Guerrero, Foyt, Simon, Johncock, Sneva, Bedard), 3 85Cs (Sullivan, Mears and Unser Sr.), 3 Lola T900s (Andretti, Unser Jr., Holmes), 1 86C (Rahal) and 1 86C Penske (Unser Sr. 1987 winner). Also, Michael at Indycals has sized his 1/43rd scale March 84C decals to fit my body (not mine, the cars's!) so there are quite a few more variations possible there. My first project for my own collection will be the pink Fittipaldi car.
I still have kits of most of the cars, so if anyone on this forum wants any I will be happy to sell them to you at my wholesale price from the mid-80s, which was 150 Danish Kroner or approximately 30 US Dollars each plus postage.

Along with this thread on 1/43 nostalgia. I have somewhere in my attic a FDS 1/43 1976 CAM2 Mario Andretti Kit. The decals were rough 10 years ago the last time I saw them, but is the kit/body and/or FDS rare? I always meant to build that one, I just don't see it happening.

I'm working on that car in 1/25th scale right now. You can get a set of 1976 CAM2 decals from Indycals in 1/43rd scale. Paul Erlendson
