This car started out as the Western Union IRL 1/18th. I stripped it and modified the chassis aero and front and rear wing end plates. The car was actually done about two weeks ago when something happened when I clear coated and it wrinkled only the blue paint on the car. I still have no clue why. Because of this I had to strip the car again and start over. Same paint/clear process as before using the same paints. I am stumped but happy now. Decals for this one came from Gary. Stu

Stu, Another great build! But I have a question...why? Did someone request you build it... Eric

Wow - who'd have thought you'd see a Shigy ride here!? ;D LOL Looks like a late 2001 scheme? I *might* have a picture of that one running at the Texas finale somewhere but I wouldn't swear to it.
Nice work and being Hattori, it should be a rare build - at least in the US. I actually ran across his name a few months ago in an article talking about a regional NASCAR team having to miss the end of the season and the owner, Shigeaki Hattori, was quote in the article. I was like, "He ended up a NASCAR owner?? LOL"
Sorry about your difficulties with the clear but the repaint looks super - thanks for sharing.

Thanks Guys.
Eric, I built this for a friend that was a mechanic on that team. He didn't tell me why but did say it was one of his most favorite years working for an Indy Team. Even more fun than the year his team won at Indy.
Other than my clear coat issue it was a fun car to build and really pretty striking paint wise.

Nice job Stu! I had to find some photos of the car to confirm the accuracy. Very odd to see a modern car with no engine manufacturer logos.

Really nice Stu. I've built many cars & wondered "why", but the collector wanted them so he got what he wanted.

Another great one Stu!
Did the IRL regulate the car number being in a rectangle vrs a roundel or no outline? Seems like a lot of IRL cars had numbers that looked similar.

Paul,
You are correct, the numbers were all to be that way from 99 through 2001. From what I recall it had to do the the leagues' belief it would make the car numbers easier to read for the fans.

Did the IRL have any fans??? Just kidding!!! ;D
The large 55 on the right side was my decal. I didn't realize it was larger until the decals were done. I just scaned the smaller decal and enlarged it. I printed it onto white decal paper and then cut around it.

I forget which year it was but I showed up to watch the race at Gateway and was asked to do signboard for Shiggy. I also did it at Chicagoland or Kentucky. It was the Vertex/Cunningham team with Epson sponsorship but I forget the year. Shiggy was a super nice guy but just wouldn't push the pedal when he caught the guy ahead of him.

The only time Shigeaki ran this #55 at Indy was 2001, according to wiki he didn't make the race, DNQ. Shame. This paint scheme is real nice!

what blue was used on this? Heck, I do not remember as it was 6 years ago. I was pretty much strictly rattle cans back then so if I had to guess I would say it was one of the Rustoleum blues.
