I see Model Empire lists decals for the Interscope Racing PC6B. What mods would be necessary to make the PC6 into a PC6B? I've always been a Danny Ongais fan and this would make a unique car to build. Thanks guys.

There was a conversion detailed in a Scale Auto mag (1980-1ish) and I think Lance is working on a transkit

I have been looking for proof that this car actually existed for some time now. In some of the Indy 500 online documentation, it lists Danny Ongais driving an Interscope Penske PC6 when in fact I believe that the car he was driving was actually a Parnelli P6. The only picture I have ever found was Ongais driving a Interscope Penske PC4 in the 1977 Canadian and US GPs.

I saw a photo on the Indy 500 web site in the photo gallery. Since the car is all black it's difficult to pick out much detail in the body. But I did notice the wheels were not like the PC6s run by Mears. They did resemble the Parnelli wheels now that Russ mentioned the P6. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Russ, I just looked at that photo on the Indy 500 site again, I think you're on to something.

Russ, I just looked at that photo on the Indy 500 site again, I think you're on to something. I'm pretty sure that Ongais drove the P6 in the race. What I'm not sure of is, did he actually have 2 cars to choose from during qualifing (a PC6 and a P6). The link below has pixs of cars from the 77 Canadian GP. At the bottom is a pictiure of Ongais standing in front of the Interscope PC4 www.zoompics.com/1977f1.htmRussD

He looks like Emiril Lagasse in that picture.

The car Danny Ongais drove in the 79 500 was a Parnelli and so was his back-up. the 2 cars pictured on cady ref.sheet are the 79 Parnelli and the 85 March

I'm guessing that you could modify the AMT Penske PC6 kit into a F1 PC4 with very few changes. The back end around the water coolers looks like the place where you would have the majority of the work (not sure about the gearbox layout). If this works then you also could do the car in its ATS paint scheme and the John Watson First National City car as well. Or coarse, there are no ATS decals available.

PC6 was Penske's primary '78 car and was used somewhat by the team in '79. For instance, Bobby Unser was running away with the 1979 Indy 500 when he broke late in the race in his PC-6B which allowed Rick Mears to get his first win in a PC-6. The PC-6 was widely sold to other teams which ran them for a few years.
Now in 1987 the PC-6 and PC-6B were long gone. The Flying Hawaiian crashed a PC-16 which opened up a team for Al Sr's remarkable 4th win in a March 86C. The interesting twist to Al's win, of course, is that his winning car had been a show car until Ongais' crash.
