I’m building a model for the first time in what must be over 25 years. It’s the AMT 88 Penske Miller/Sullivan PC-17. I want it build it to look as close as possible to the car I saw run at Indy that year. In researching, I see where these cars had air vents in the side pods that are not in the AMT kit. I’ve racked my brain trying to think of a way to put these in but have yet to come up with a method. Anyone here ever try this or have a good idea? Thanks.

I do not recall ever seeing a good closeup of them. Not sure if they are cut outs or mesh covered or what!?!?

I've been aware of them, but my thoughts were that they are so imperceptible that the return on investment in time to make such a mod wasn't there for me.

What you've found is probably a difference between the PC17 as it was run at Indy and how it was run at Michigan. I believe that the AMT 1988 Penske PC-17 was researched at the Michigan 500. You will have to add a NACA duct on each side of the side pods. I've had to do that myself a couple of times this year. It's pretty easy if you have a parts kit or two. If you have an extra AMT Lola there are plenty of NACA ducts on the body that could be cut out and graphed onto the Penske side pods. Here's a photo on how I did it on a Tamiya Ferrari 312T3 that I'm working on. Paul Erlendson Attachments:

Guess I am confused. Are you talking NACA ducts of the cutouts just in front of the rear wheels?
I know that Revell left off several NACA ducts on the Reynard. Off the top of my head, there is one on the nose and one on each side of the sidepods.

Thanks for the input. As this is my first build in a very long time, I really don't have any parts kits or spares. Not sure yet what I'll try.
