considering the pedigree that it has, it's good to see that it finally will be restored. with the money they probably received for it, the old owners could put some type of replica up on top of their building. duane

I got to see the car in 1962,my first Indy 500 race. This is a great ending to the story.I`m glad to know a little history on the car,and it sounds like it`s in good hands. Thanks so much for posting this. Jim

I just love the history of the 500. The more I learn the more excited I get about it. Makes me want to build the Sam Hanks 1956 Jones & Maley Special.
Maybe Indycals will put it on his list of things to do.

Thanks for that story Steve. Such a glorious past deserves the treatment it will now recieve. I just love the fact that I can learn so many great things about Indy on this forum. The passion and knowledge available about the 500 almost superceeds the modeling knowledge. The most fun place I've ever been that doesn't serve alcohol.

I believe the artwork for this car has already been done, let me look into this. The good news is that it is a standard KK, so not much modification should be needed, regardless of scale.

There looks to be an inlet just inside the front wheels.
Anyways, the article was great in filling in the details. Can't wait to see this restoration - it has got to be totally rusted through so I will be impressed if they can save anything.

By the time it's over, very little of what came off the roof will still be there, so long as some of it is!!!!

I hope they restore it as The Safety Glass Special since that's where it came from. Cool story, I also hope we get to see it when it's done.

Alright guys. Time to weigh in. Bill Gates just handed you this body and a blank check...
So, what do you restore the car to be?

For me, I'd want to restore it to the Jones & Maley Special. Though I would be initially in favor of the 1956 2nd place car, I would want to know if that livery was different from the one Vucky tested - a Vucky car is hard to resist!!

The history of the older cars is so fascinating to me. I just wonder if we will be talking about the current cars thirty years from now?
Oh and I'd have to go with the 1956 2nd place car.

No doubt in my mind, the 1956 runner up. I always held Sam Hanks and Jim Rathmann in the same esteem as the late Bill Vukovich. Both men drove for a LONG time in a dangerous era without a scratch, won a lot of races, including Indy and were fan favorites. I never met Vuky, but you could not ask for more gracious guys than Sam and Jim, all class.

I am glad that the car is down and in good hands. There were only so many Kurtis 500Cs and now we can hope that this one is restored to its former self. I would go with it as it appeared in 1956 which was its best outing or go with it as it first appeared at the Speedway in 1954. Thanks for all the comments about this. Jim
