Looks like something only pilots from Edwards AFB should have been driving. That had to be a scary as hell ride in that thing.

The information with the article said the car had drum brakes but the pictures show discs. Remember the fun Foyt had at Talledaga (sp?) running his Indy car. I don't remember the year, maybe 1977 or 1978, but he ran around 215. Did Penske and Donohue run their Cam-Am car there too? Too many years for me to remember. You guys can help. The days when you just tried to run fast. Jim

From Wikipedia:
On 9 August 1975, Porsche and Penske would give the Can-Am car its final send off in style, when they took their 917/30 to Talladega to break the FIA speed record on a closed circuit. With Mark Donohue driving, the average speed reached was 221.160 mph (355.923 km/h).[8] As well as being the last official outing for the 917, it was the last major accomplishment for Donohue before his fatal accident in practice for the Austrian Grand Prix a week later. The record would stand until 1980.

The 917 was in Cam2 colors at Talladegaand not the familiar Sunoco paint from CanAm days.
I would have like Penske to take his Reynard to 'Dega after the 2000 season when de Ferran set the closed course record at around 241 with the Handford Device (think wing designed to be an aero boat anchor) at Fontana. A minimal horizontal plane rear wing would surely have allowed for some more mph as would not having to run a pop-off valve.

In August, 1974: A.J. Foyt set a close course speed record of 217.854 mph at Talladega Speedway in his Coyote Indy Car, when Mark Donhue broke the record in the Cam 2 Porsche 917 ( which Paul Fisher offers this kit w/ Sunoco or Cam 2 decals) Foyt was going to go back and get the record back, but when Mark was killed Foyt decided not to go back and let Mark's record stand as a tribute to him.
