Like they do every year various FOTA & manufacturers threaten to pull out of the FIA F-1 series for various reasons , Ferrari and Lotus over the years have taken it as far as building cars for existing series, ie CART, or starting breakaway new series, to get their way with the FIA... Even last year and probably this year someone will do this. Ferrari has forced rules changes, purse and TV payouts, in their favor many times this way. After all what would the F-1 World Championship be with out a Ferrari, or say McLaren? Enzo did this in 65? with the Sports Car Championship causing a cancellation of the final round, thus snatching the Championship from Shelby and his Cobra's ' all they had to do to win was show up and run to win over Ferrari but since there was no race, or no points race, I dont remember, Ferrari won by default leading by only a point or two, Enzo was sure to lose .... Of Course Shelby came back the following year and won the Championship anyway. This is the way politics were handled at that time... and to some extent still are! Chris

Split the Lotus question off from the Ligier thread as to keep them separate. That Lotus is a great looking car - would love to see some more clear and detailed pictures of it. Wondering if they actually made a motor for it and if it tested, etc. I'm sure it was a non-starter but all I'd ever heard about was the Ferrari..... Jordan

As I recall the story, Al Jr. had signed up for the Lotus ride, leaving the Galles team. After the Lotus deal fell through, Al Jr. was rideless as Galles had already signed Geoff Brabham. Doug Shierson contacted Al Sr. about a ride as Penske had signed Danny Sullivan for 85 with Al only guaranteed rides for the three 500 mile races. Al declined the Sheirson offer to stay with Penske in a limited role (which of course turned out to not be that limited), but did tell Doug that Al Jr. was looking for work since the Lotus deal wasn't going to happen.
I may have gotten some parts wrong, but that's what I remember from various interviews.
