The current Replicas & Miniatures Company of Maryland catalog has “P-129 1/24 cool wheels for Monogram Black Widow Reissue”, which look like late 1950’s- early 1960’s Halibrand roadster wheels, with 5 stud mounting instead of knock-offs. They are $8.95 a set, complete with lug nuts and valve stems. Thinking that the Black Widow tires might be suitable Indy tires, I purchased a Black Widow kit. Jackpot! The kit is a real nostalgia period piece, but the tires are absolutely perfect, soft vinyl, 16” fronts and 18” rears, with a very fine dirt track tread pattern, probably a bit too light, and plain sidewalls. The fronts have circumferential treads while the backs also have the prototypical dirt track diagonal groves. According to MacMiller’s website, indyroadsters.webs.com/, Indy roadster wheel and tire sizes during the 1952-1962 era were: Front: 7.60 x16, approximately 29"inches in diameter, 6.5" wide and 4" tread width, on 16" x 6" Halibrand magnesium wheels. Rear: 8.00 x 18, approximately 31.5" in diameter, 7.75" wide and 5.25" tread width, on 18” x 7” Halibrand magnesium wheels The Black Widow tire diameters are spot on in 1/24th scale, coming in at 1 and 3/16 for the fronts and 1 and 5/16 for the rears. They are too wide for Indy tires, checking in at ¼” front for a scale 6’width and at 5/16th on the rears for a scale 7.25”.
