Holy Moly Lance! Don't shock my old heart like this! I'm stunned. I had to go get another glass of wine (medicinal purposes of course) and sit back down and look again. What a great choice, a beautiful car. Needless to say I'm in for one.

Lance: Put me down for one. The local library in the mid-60's had a re-cap book of the 1960 season with black and white photos ( but lots of them). The Scarab was already outdated when it debuted, but it still took my breath away. There are dozens of pictures of these online, and it is STILL a knockout... Patrick; Desmodromic- I believe it means that the intake and exhaust valves are not operated with a cam and springs, but rather 2 cams for a positive return. Not as cheap as springs and never used on mass produced models because it was more expensive.Supposedly it was better for a high reving engines because springs broke easily. Sometime in the 50's (56-57?), they found a better way to make springs that would last. Most famous of course, are the Return of the Silver Arrows in 54-55 with the all conquering 3 liter Mercedes Benz in their F1 and sport cars... Tim

Beautiful car and a popular choice. Is this going to be a full kit, if it is, please put me on the list. I really want one of those on the UK model show circuit. Steve.

Lance, I was looking at this post card, the #48 restored car , the #27 and #28 (ultimate car page) and the car in the postcard and the #27 both have left side exhauts, the postcard car has an additional driverside bulge on the top of the hood next to the scoop, while the #48 and #28 restored cars have right side exhausts and no bulge??? I dont know how many versions of the car they built but it is interesting, Chris

There were 3 different engines installed in the Scarab F-1. Early testing was done with a lay-down Offy with the exhaust coming out the right side. The Offy went back in after Formula 1, for Formula Intercontinental. The Scarab F-1 engine, which looked a lot like the Offy, no surprise, also had its exhaust coming out on the right. A Chevy small was installed after the F-1 dreams were down the tubes and that, of course, had exhausts on both sides. The Chevy powered car is the one in The Sound of Speed.

I'll buy one. Top of the line Ducatti motorcycles still use desmodromic valves. Why was the Offy engine such a stone in F1 and European sports car races?

Any pictures I have from the 1960 F1 season: Lance Reventlow at the Belgium GP: The 1960 Monaco pit with the two Scarabs: Also Monaco with Chuck Daigh: Monaco Lance Reventlow DNQ: Stirling Moss trying it at Monaco,to help the team which stayed dispointed as they did not qualify,Moss said:"Enough power but not right moment. And very poor stability"... Lance Reventlow & Chuck Daigh at Monaco: Belgium GP pit with the two Scarabs: Belgium Chuck Daigh: Riverside GP pit with the transporter & the Chuck's car: At Riverside a motor view, perhaps the Scarab??? The Scarab today: And the only 1/43 I know, the Jade Miniatures model car,in Monaco GP version: Greetings.

Great pix of a neat machine! I'll definitely get one. I think the Riverside engine shot is an Offy laying down on exhaust side and without the injector tubes. The ignition is on the side, not the front (?) showing 4 yellow wires. Be interesting to draw the load paths on those upper front A-arms. . .

Lance, The folks over at the GPMA group are excited by this project and show interest in it. Maybe talk to Ed at Island Collectables.

Lovely job. How much will I need to save up? I'd love to have one in our collection, it would turn some heads in this side of the pond I can tell you.
Great picturs too Gwadagone. Another car on my to-do list now. regards Ian
