I am trying to convert a 1993 A J Foyt retirement car and I have a few reference pictures but I can't tell if the suspension is chrome or black. In the pictures I have it looks like there is some chrome pieces but the rest of it looks black. Does anyone have a good picture of the suspension on his 93 car. I was there the day he retired. I did not get a close up of the car. I was in the stands. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

99% certain the suspension was black. There is an interview with AJ in 1993 on YouTube and shows part of his fairwell lap. The suspension gleams but I thinks that's the reflection of the sun. I would think that chrome would really show up.

I watched that video it didn't help much. I have the Indy Review book but it still does not give a great picture of the suspension as a whole. I do know there is one chrome piece that comes down to the wheel base from the top of the nose. and I think the back suspension there is one to two pieces that are chrome but I think the rest is black. On John Andretti's car the preview for the race his is all black. I can't tell on the close up of Robby G's car on the race preview.

I had a pic but I think I deleted it where the suspension is chrome. I made 2 of these with chrome. 500 Legends used black & John is pretty accurate with his customs. There are no 93 Minichamps Lolas with chrome so they must be chromed which could be the reason guys use black. Wish I could find that photo. AJ may have borrowed some suspension pieces for one of his cars, not sure.

Thanks for the help. I will keep keep you posted if I find any good pictures. I asked my uncle if he has any pictures. It may take him a while he has tons of pictures. He use to have pit access from a good friend who use to be on a race team in the 50's and 60's. We still sit in the same seats he had. 50 some odd years. Turn one all the way to the top. Great action seats.

Robby Gordon's team car had black suspension and chrome pushrods - at least in qualifying.

Well here is my contribution. I was at Nazareth Speedway in 93 and got some great shots of Foyt's car driven by Robby Gordon. Here are some pictures of the rear suspension. As you can see they are not really black or chrome but a metallic gray color. As seen in the first picture, the car in the rear seems to have some chrome suspension parts, but all are the same color. I replicate this effect with spraying the suspension with Testors flat black. When the paint is good and dry, I rub them with my fingers. This gives the suspension a soft shine and a gray metallic color. Hopefully this helps you out. Jim

I found the photo I was looking for but I think it's the 92 Indy 500. AJ is powered by Chevy in this photo.

Ralph you are right your picture is from "92. AJ ran Chevy power up until "92 and switched to Ford Cosworth power in "93. The chrome suspension on that black car does look awesome!! The suspension is black on the '93 car. They powder coat paint the pieces which on a bright sunny day or how light may reflect off them may appear to look like chrome. I do think that they used chrome push rods upon occasion. If I can think of it next time I go to the Speedway I will go to the photo shop just to make sure that they were actually black.

Foyt has always been able to cut corners.... wonder if Robby's 93 suspension piece traced back to 92?

Yes they were black in 93 but I put chrome on mine, looks good against the black.
