Ok I finally got two sets cast from the masters created by Russ. Here are the masters: and here is a mockup for the 1960 Winner. I did a mock up of the AMT original for a comparison. The conversion kit includes the rear cover, hood, nose of your choice, 4 wheels and tires, small oil tank, and various bumps, bubbles, and scoops. You need to furnish your own AMT kit/parts. I'm not extreemly proud of the wheels and tires but Russ says they are fine. I plan on casting two piece wheels and tires in the future based on Etzel's test pops. I only have two right now and I'll let you all know when I have more so i'm not taking any pre-orders. If you want to let me know your intrest I would have an idea on how many to make. Cost is $35.00 plus S&H to your location. 1st come 1st serve. Dr. Dave

Hello Everyone!!! No, this isn't Chris Etzel's Speed Classic Watson kit.....It's the old AMT 1963 Watson kit with the parts DrDave is currently selling as a conversion kit. That, plus a little elbow grease and Fred Cady's decals you can get a good looking old Watson. I did the masters, Chris was kind enough to do the casting and now DrDave is doing the castings for you...His parts are on the equal with Chris's. Also...I wish I remember who built this one.....but DrDave does the parts for it too. Best to you all! Russ

Ok, guys thanks for the response. Like I said I have two complete sets ready now. $25.00 without wheels. $35.00 with wheels plus S&H. You choose the nose 59-60,62 or the 61. Here is who I have heard from and in order. Contact me by Email droberts@ridgerunners.net and let me know how many sets, wheels or not, and nose option. Also include your address for mailing. I'll pack it up, take it to the PO and send you an Email with the total and my address for payment. I'm doing a lot of flying lately so it will be October before I have a chance to cast some more and hopefully ever two weeks or so I should have a couple ready. I'll notify you when I have your order ready. Ok, Bruce your up!

I don't know if I have mentioned it, but I needed an oil tank for my '61 Simoniz Spl. Dr. Dave had a test shot and it looks great! The missing piece to the puzzle for me. I will be getting these sets for my older Watson builds along with the sets Lance has done for the '63-'64 winners (which are also fantastic!)

Wow, really nice job on a great looking car.
HEY RUSS, info please- is this story true or a urban legend- I've been told 'Ken' & 'Paul' were a couple of Texas oil millionaires that decided it would be fun to have a race car to go along with the 'big party' in Indianapolis every May. During the race they started the party early were well on their way to getting plastered when someone caught up with them and said, "You guys better get back to your pits, you're about to win the 500!" I checked "The Watson Years" and it confirmed the oil money part, but didn't go much deeper than that. Probably not true, but a good story I heard while bench racing with some friends awhile back. Hey Sandy!
Check Joe Scalzo's book on the Roadster era. It has a whole chapter devoted to the saga of the 1960 Indy 500 and a section on Ken Rich and Paul Lacey. The whole book is a good read. Pick it up if you don't have it. It's a must for all roadster enthusiasts like me!

Sandy.......TRUE STORY!!!.......er, I think. Consider the scorce, Joe Scalzo, a writer from here in California, has the reputation of, "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story," or, The Liberty Valance effect, "Wen the legend becomes fact, PRINT THE LEGEND." tells this story. And....I have had it confirmed by Jim Rathmann, Rodger Ward and others. Kenny Rich and Paul Lacey were two young, wealthy and very hard partying Texans that Jim Rathmann knew and called when he got tired of driving for the old nickel nurser, Lindsay Hopkins at the end of the 1959 USAC Season. Rathmann knew he could talk these guys into backing a race team. Rathmann, who had finished second three times was tired of not winning the race. Rathmann always complained about Hopkins being to cheap and not getting the best crew or team together for the 500, he was tired of Hopkins getting, "Just good enough equipment" as well. Rathmann, who had been hired by Hopkins because he wanted to run on pavement only in 1959, wanted to put together his own team for Indianapolis. So on a stop-over in Dallas, Rathmann called two hard partying Texans he knew, Kenny rich and Paul Lacey to come over tot eh airport for a meeting, thus the Ken-Paul Team was formed for 1960. According to Rathmann, he hired A.J. Watson to build a car and got famed Offy Engine Magician Chickie Hirashima to build and tune the engine for the team. Hired Smokey Yuinick has pit crew chief from NASCAR, and went out to win the 500....finally. Rathmann qualified second and was near or in the lead most of the day. While Rich & Lacey were...according to Scalzo, too overexcited, nervous and plastered to watch the duel between their car and Waston's. At one point, having gotten separated from Rich, Lacey was in the one of the Gasoline Alley's latrines getting ready to relieve himself in a wash basin instead of a urnial....onlt the quick thinking and shots from a Speedway Janitor stopped that from happening. If you are familiar with the 1960 500, I won't bore you with the details. But it is still, considered by most, one of the best 500's ever run. For the last two thirds of the race, Ward and Rathmann were nose to tail. Having the honor and pleasure of talking to both men many times about it, they say all most, word for word the same thing. "You could run right next to him and not worry about touching." "He was smooth as silk" and the only difference is, Ward, who had stalled his car on the first stop said, shanking his head, "I had him covered until I did that." The two drivers, officially change the lead 24 of the 29 times, still a 500 record. Rathmann would later add, "That doesn't include the laps where Rodger or I would lead by the start finish line, one of us wools past the other coming out of turn two....to only get past coming out of turn four. They only count a lead change if you past the start-finish line on a lap. This went on all day." While this was going on, the crowds were going crazy!!!! Rich and Lacey were between Gasoline Alley, Turn One and drinking to see what was happening, but listening to Tom Carnegie going crazy over the cheering crowd. A Track Official had to find both and drag them to Victory Lane when Rathmann won. That started the grand-daddy of all victory celebrations at the Speedway Hotel....It went on for days! True story, give or take a lie or two....But I got it confirmed many times by Rathmann and Ward as well....and Bob Clidinst who was there....also the late John Laux and Bob Laycock. Paul Page who was there, said most of the crowd yelled themselves horse.... I Love the Indianapolis 500!!! I wish I was there. Best to you Russ

Russ, Thanks for expounding (is that a word?) on this great story. Its things like the 1960 race itself and stories like this that make the Indy 500 magic. Sandy

Russ Russ, I have been making decals for this car (1/64) from some photos I have. What color is the Leader Card lettering? Also some Leader Crads have the Arrow through it and some don't. Is this one suppose to have it? For those interested once I get them back and I am happy with them I will post them to the list . The image files are vector graphics. I have been using Xara Xtreme to draw them and they will be easily scaled up to larger scale. I found a good photo of the Oil Tank graphic it was a pain to draw. Roger Corrie
