Currently working on the Finecast white metal Lotus and an old Merit plastic Vanwall. Both 1/24 scale. Lotus is just waiting Clear-coat before I can complete assembly. Steering gear and rear anti-roll bar were not included in the part count so will have to be scratch built. The Vanwall has been fun. I wanted to add a bit more detail as the kit is basic. Nice, but basic. I also took the opportunity to make this modular so I could paint the body without loads of masking. Hopefully the pics will be self explanatory. Finecast kit starts with cleaning up all parts and dry assembly to make sure everything is good and ready for the build process. Suspension is assembled and sprayed gloss black ready for Alclad chrome. Two halves glued and filled. Interior and suspension masked for spraying. Paint and decals on, waiting for paint to cure fully before 2K clear. Merit Vanwall was purchased built but not quite a glue bomb, thankfully. Model came apart easily. I looked at my reference pics and formulated the plan, just enough detail to make a decent model but not become a bear to put together. Wheels were replaced with SEF wires and wobbly webs for the rear. Now ready for paint. Front axle had very little work as nearly all of it is hidden by bodywork. Regards, Steve.

Looks great Steve. I wish the seam line was different on the SEF Lotus! Such a pain. The stripe has it looking great! Weren't the Vanwalls huge, but oh so slippery.

The Vanwall is now complete and the Lotus is just waiting for mirrors. Lotus screen was tricky to fit but lots of masking tape and tiny dabs of cyano eventually did the trick. Pics of the Vanwall, please feel free to comment or critique..... Cheers, Steve.

Great work. What SF wheels did you use, are they the same as your ERA? Take Care Craig

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. Craig, the wheels and tyres are all SEF. Tyres are from the Lotus 25 kit as are the rear wheels (wobbly webs) Front wires are MGB type.
All the best, Steve.

Steve,
I used the SEF Lotus wobblies for my Vanwall also.

Patrick, it is quite fortunate that Dave Ellis is happy to sell individual wheels and parts from his kits. Incidentally, I have worked out that the etch wheel kit SP04 and tyres from the ERA kit make very nice sets for the Merit range of early Grand Prix cars such as the Alfa 158, Lancia D50, Talbot Lago, etc. Works out at £13.75 GBP for a set of wheels and tyres. Good value considering other manufacturers prices such as Profil 24 for example. Looking forward to seeing your Vanwall. All the best, Steve.

The Lotus is now complete. I had to paint a black surround on the screen as there were some slight glue marks. Not quite correct for the style of screen, I will have to be more careful in the future. The problem was caused by the adhesive wicking under the masking tape that I used to hold the screen in place. Next up on the bench are a couple more Merit re-builds. BRM P25 and Lancia-Ferrari D50. Regards, Steve.

Very nice work Steve. I am so impressed by the clean work you do. I'm a chicken gut when it comes to windscreens and need to cut mineand attach it. I don't think I painted the lug bolts in the wheels either. I does make a difference.
I pulled out the Vanwall the other day and saw some parts had fallen off. I also remember now that the plan was to use the wobblies until I began my Lotus 18 project and needed them there, so wires are on the Vanwall. Weren't the Vanwall's wobblies white? I assumed so. Beautiful work anyway. Nice to see more F1s made here!

Hi Patrick, thanks for the kind words. I actually drilled the holes for the lug nuts but decided just to put a black wash in the holes as the simulated bolts did not fit very well due to the deign of the parts I think. I based my build on photos from the web which show silver wheels. I know the Lotus 18 of Rob Walker had white wobblies though, seen colour pics of that. I have studied my own pics of the Lotus 25 and think that the screen would have been a better fit if I had cut it higher up? It looks like I had it too wide at the base which made it difficult to fit. Like you say, this is always a fraught time as with most kits you only get one attempt. Good luck with getting the Vanwall together.
Steve.

She looks lovely Patrick. Are those the original kit decals? Whilst preparing my D.50 for paint I was struggling with how to do the twin rows of rivets down the body sides. I was pointed towards Archer fine transfers by a work colleague who is a railroad modeller. I ordered some of their resin rivet decals, these arrived yesterday and I think they are going to look fantastic. I'll start another thread when I have some photos to share. Oh, they also do weld lines. I got some of those too as the Lancia has some quite obvious welds showing round the back end. Rgds, Steve.

I'm looking forward to that build with the rivets as I have Pilette's D50 awaiting only the mirrors and can easily do the rivet add-on.

Like them both Steve, good job. Like what you've done with the Merit Vanwall there's so much space in the body it begs for a bit of work like this.
I like the 25, I recently did the SEF Lotus 33 but converted it to have a BRM engine and Hewland 'box. You seem to have used the same build method I used. The join line down the body is a problem and I couldn't see an easier way to deal with the suspension.
Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Regards Ian
