I'll preface this WIP by saying thanks to Chris for donating another Hong Kong toy to my Cooper collection. New Entry for Winter Build-a-thon... Well this is a strange toy with the company of manufacturer being "WM". It began its existence as a steerable battery run toy. My last Cooper WIP was a T53 (actually a Marx toy) 1959 F1 winner "] and this new car does look a bit pre-dated. That's the reason I decided to build it up as the 1958 Argentina GP winner entered by RRC "Rob" Walker for Stirling Moss. I started by cutting out the cockpit area and reshaping the front nose. Now on to collect parts...

Looks like another rare addition to your fantastic collection Patrick. I love to see how you turn these kids toys into show pieces, looking forward to watching the progress. Steve.

After much more research I discovered that the Walker car is really a T43 and not a T41. Certainly a minor change, but a year later car. I found out that the Walker car was modified by Alf Francis, Walker's chief mechanic, from the factory cars by having disc brakes in the front, a upper wishbone on the rear suspension, and trailing links to the top rear uprights. Francis also added a larger radiator and modified the nose because of it. Sometimes I love the research better than the building! Here's the restored car that is in in the Collier Museum in Fla. We are going to have fun watching this! If I made movie about Patrick's models it would be called "Toys gone real" ....a little strange but real.

I cut and fitted the radiator into the nose... I laid out the basic chassis floor... images51.fotki.com/v278/photos/2/1465922/9735393/DSCF3107-vi.jpg[/img] Then I trimmed a piece of paper as a template for the engine bay/cockpit bulkhead and cut some sheet plastic to fit... and repositioned the seat to see how everything fits... finally I started building up the chassis... I still haven't decided how to assemble the chassis in the body, but that will come... Patrick

I decided to cut the body open at the body join line and broke part of the brittle plastic doing it. Not a bad break though, easily glued. the abbreviated chassis fits easily enough now into the interior... let's start on the rear suspension next... Patrick

I got the body painted today and bought some excellent Cooper rims from Herb Deeks at the NNL/West that look perfect. I also bought some finned drum brakes from Scenes Unlimited because the Coopers of this era didn't have discs yet. Interestingly, Rob Walker's team helped introduce many innovations into GP racing. Photos tomorrow...

Chris,
What is the WB for the Cooper 500 in 1/24 scale? The Bonneville Streamliner interests me and it was based on a type 500! Another Cooper racer for me!

Moving along... I found a great picture from above that shows the seat was a baby blue. So...repaint it! The front suspension is giving me some troubles. Patrick

Fabulous build Patrick. I've been asked to consider doing the masters for a kit of the Walker Cooper in 1/20th (I've previously done the works T51 and the BRP T51 of 1960). My research had me going round in circles over the T41-T43 issue. I had it settled as an updated T43 F2 car that was used in '58 Argentine GP and they had a new T43 to play with, albeit Alf Francis ammended as mentioned, for the '59 F1 season. I'd be grateful of your clarification, was it the same car for '58-'59 and any tips you have. Regards Ian

Ian,
Everything I read says the "Argentine Cooper" of Walker's team was a T43. However, in Doug Nye's book (to me the "Bible"!) he says that the chassis was wrecked and replaced by a new one. This newly assembled car was/is referred to as the "Argentine Cooper T43". So, perhaps the bent chassis was a T41!? Both cars ran with a 1.96 liter Coventry-Climax. For me a T43 is good enough at this point.

Thanks Patrick, I think I'll go along with you on this. I can use T43 dimensions and build what I can see in the photo's.
many thanks Ian
