After about a 20 year break (pretty sure I was 10 the last time I built an Indy car) I decided to give it a shot again. I decided that I was going to start a project that included as many 1988 Indy 500 cars as I could stand to build.
First up was Danny Sullivan's Miller High Life car. Second only to Rick Mears' ride as my favorite car as a kid. I made a few mistakes and learned a few things trial by fire that I will definitely improve in the future (wheel covers, front suspension were biggies) but overall I don't think it was a bad re-introduction to models.
The worst problem that I had was with the gold paint. I used Tamiya gold out of a rattle can for the first time and soon regretted that. It was very difficult to get down evenly and even though I cleared it before the decals, when I did again afterwards, the decal edges REALLY stood out as a different color. I've never had that problem with any other color. I might eventually go back and build this one again and try to get it looking better.
Next up was Arie's Provimi Veal Lola. I built this one pretty much box stock other than the addition of seat belts and Indycals decals (which were awesome on this car).
I'm hoping that I can get back in practice and start turning out some really nice ones after a few more learning experiences.
