George Bignotti was one of the most sucessful chief mechanics in Indy history, winning the 500 several times with different teams. He also owned and raced midgets after WWII. This is him in his own car in 1947... He had glasses on instead of goggles(?)... The kit is wonderful, but as others have noted some parts are tiny... All in all, a fun build... Thanks for looking... Tim

Old BIG NUTS, as he was known, would be proud of this one.

Tim,
That looks great! Did you reshape the rims? They look a little less rounded on the inside and more like the older style before mags were used.

Gentlemen: Thanks for the compliments. Yes, the figure is my recast of Chris Etzel's driver. However, major mods on the feet and lower legs. I don't see how AJ and some of the tall guys fit into these things. The wheels are straight from the box, with black wash, and then dull coated. The effect really startled me; a good wash really can change the way things look. With this kit, I realized that someone has replaced my youthful fingers with fat, stubby things that find these parts...tiny... Tim

This build looks great Tim. You said you cast the Driver figure? You done a great job on him. I can also relate on the larger finger thing....it seems mine have started doing the same thing. The 1/43 build I'm doing really showed me that...LOL

I believe this car was a 7x driven by Bob Sweikert the following year. If so I watched this car get restored last year.

Bignotti, or "Big Nuts" as he was known, is also the answer to a trivia question. He is the first man to put a race car on the brand new Phoenix International Raceway. Foyt, his driver, was late in arriving. To make A.J. mad, Bignotti waited until his private plane was in sight and then took some laps so that the Texan could see him!

I guess it would take Big Nuts to purposely make AJ mad. I'd love to have been there when AJ arrived at the track.
