Johnny Lightening

Hi, being a newbie here, there are many things that I know little about indy cars. One thing I would like to know is about the 1970 and 1971 Johnny Lightening cars. Were they the same car or were they completely different cars? Also Where can I get good photos of the cars. I have found some photos on the web, but some views leave many unanswered questions. Any help here will be greatly appreciated. Regards from Wrencher.

Check the Indycals.net website in the "Indycar museum" section. There are definitely differences, including colors.

Thanks guys, where do you get reference material, I have the excellent book"Indianapolis 500 Chronicles", but I will need more details. What do you guys recommend? BTW This is a great site for modelers like us. P.S. I also found Model car world which has custom paints for models ready for the airbrush. They have many race colors available. No I don't work for them.

The 70 and 71 car were different. The 70 car had a big bulging fuel tank on the driver's left side - this was absent on the 1971 car. The 1971 car was very dark - almost black - blue. Non-metallic. The 70 car was a brilliant candy apple blue. If you use Tamiya TS44 and overcoat it with Tamiya Clear blue, I think you will nail the 1970 car perfectly. For 1971 - Tamiya TS55 dark blue.

Here's a pic of the 1970 Johnny Lightning car. If you're looking at a decently color correct monitor, this color is very accurate IMO - ie, there should be no color cast to the wall or the track (except for a slight yellowish cast on the track near the wall).
