Hello beardog,
Race day pics of that car have been EXTREMELY hard for me to find other than the head on view, which does not offer much in the way of sponsor decals...From what I have seen, the decals were just a few, clustered behind the front wheels. I will try to locate some pics in a couple recently acquired books and post them here. I do know however, that the nose number was changed to a black #6 on a white meatball and the side view number was placed on the left of the cowl as a plain white #6...For raceday only!

Thank you very much, that's the car I'm looking for, I've found a few photos, and I'm pretty sure that Gurney's car had the same contingency decals also, it looked like an easy project untill I decided to model the car that actualy ran in the 500.

From a newly discovered picture of the right side of this car I see that the white #6 was also added onto the right side directly beside the driver. I will post these pics in the morning!

Hi Bill
Fantastic! I have never seen the right hand side of the car, and would never have guessed there was a number there too.
Thanks Chris

Here you go, Chris! These are from the book "Team Lotus, the Indianapolis Years" by Andrew Ferguson. I paid less than 10 bucks for it recently on Amazon but to me it is priceless... Here is Jimmy waiting for the wreck to be cleared. Note the white tape on his face to protect fom debris... Here is the car in the first turn after breaking...Note the screen wire surrounding the transaxle. Must have been race day required... Here is the right side after the race. The car has been repaired and is now on Firestones! Hope these help! Bill H

Thanks Bill...Incredible, those are the shots I've been looking for, now I can I.D. every sponsor logo. Many thanks....Do you have any close-up referrence for the 2 Indianapolis 500 logos that are next to the front wheel, just above the Rayestos Shield?
Thanks Thanks Thanks...Chris

Those are neat photos, but there are some discrepencies between the photos and captions; e. g., In the photo of Clark sitting by the left front wheel, there is a white six on the left upper body in front of the windscreen, which is not on the car in the wreck photo, indicatring that the sitting photo was not a race day photo. Also, I don't see the screen wire around the transaxle, as mentioned.

Hello!
I have been studying this particular race for a number of years now. That said, the pic of Jim Clark sitting by the front tire is absolutely during the race. It was taken while the track crew was cleaning up the debris from the horrible 2nd lap crash. The caption is a bit mistaken in that the leaders had actually entered the 2nd lap but the crash victims were still on their first. I have other pics clearly showing the number on the cowl at the start of the race. It just happens to be hidden by bodywork or tires in the other pics I posted here. As to the screen wire, if you will look very closely you will see it has been attached to the pushbar bracing and wrapped under the transaxle from left to right. It is not easy to see, but if one compares this pic to another without the screen it is easily visible. I shall post additional pics of both examples soon. Thank you for your interest! Bill H

Just to remove all doubt... from Clymer's yearbook of the 1964 Indy 500: This is where they have moved the cars past the wreck site and are now in line on the front strech A view of the car from the rear at some point before race day. NOTE: The scan does not show the screen I refer to nearly as well as the original pic. You can bet the farm it is there, however!! Respectfully, Bill H I HAVE JUST NOTICED SOME SORT OF COOLER/SCOOP DEVICE TO THE RIGHT OF THE TRANS that is not there previous to race day...Hmmmm...
