The 1998 Reynard kit's can be used to build any of the 2001 cars

I've seen these photos while trying to search on the internet....it appears that only the top link to the photo is from Lausitzring. The car had extended tops on the side pods and little flipper wings in the front. The videos I have seen from the race as Zanardi comes into the pits clearly illustrate the flippers in the front. The other photos are not from that race. Thanks all fopr the help...this one is going to prove a little more difficult than expected.

Are you still looking for photos of Zanardi's Lausitzring car? I was there and I am sure I can help.

Yes, I just had some problems with my scanner, but here are a few. I have a few more, but they show the car from about the same angles. Unfortunately I don't have many detail shots which is weird as I have that of most other cars. I think it's interesting that the car ran in full Pioneer and MCI Worldcom livery in practice and qualifying (top photo), but come race day morning all signage had been stripped from the car and replaced by Stars and Stripes on the sidepod top and sides (middle photo). Anybody know why the sponsor logos were removed? Incidentally, many of the cars at the race carried the American flag as the race was just a few days after 9/11.

I think you answered your own question at the end there.

I think you answered your own question at the end there. I don't really think so. The question is not why the car ran with the flags, but why the sponsor logos were removed. There were other cars that flew the flag that day, but they still had all sponsor logos intact. Pioneer and MCI were much in evidence on other cars, so it can't have been a choice on their part to skip the race, either.

Bo, the reason is going to be the exact same reason the Ferrari F1 team ran at Monza in 2001, with no sponsor logos and a black nose. As a mark of respect for the victims of the attacks on 9/11. Same thing goes for the Nascar Winston Cup race that ran at dover a few days after 9/11. The majority of the Nascar teams left off sponsor logos, and instead ran American Flags, prominently on the hood of the car in a lot of cases. A sign of unity and patriotism in the days after 9/11. That is the reason the MCI/Pioneer logos are replaced with the American Flag. Example of Ricky Ruddy, in the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford Taurus, with American Flag prominently on the Hood, instead of the huge Texaco 'T' that was famous with the #28 Car.

My guess is pulling sponsor logos for such a tribute and still getting paid takes corporate approval. It might have been something the team and sponsors did not get worked out until late in the race weekend.
My theory is some companies made the decision rather quick to pull their logos for flags. Other companies that did not think of such a tribute before hand decided to follow suit later. Some pulled logos for the US flag and some ran logos plus US flag. Of course, they were all abroad when this happened which made changes much more difficult to execute.
NASCAR had a lot more post-9/11 tributes in their first race back but they also had more prep time since they postponed their race the following weekend unlike F1 and CART.

Thanks Bo...the shot with the helmets is great as now I understand the sidepod extensions. It sure looks like they were "bolt on".
