As a modestly skilled model builder, I am always looking for the best ways to make my builds better, so I thought I'd start a thread for everyone to post their tips or ask for specific tips. My request is probably simple for most of you: What is the best way to do a multi-color paint scheme? One of my next builds is going to be the Scott Brayton Amway Lola, and that car was pink on top, white through the middle and a cool shade of blue on the bottom portion and side pods. I haven't found the best way to mask off an area that was already sprayed so the other colors don't bleed into it. I already have the white part of that car done (OK, so that was the easy part ) but I want to start on the other colors soon. My tip? Don't know if any of you do this but I wear thin latex gloves when spray painting. It sure beats having to use thinner or mineral spirits for cleaning my hands when I'm done and they are inexpensive for a bag of 50.

Buy some good painting tape. I recommend Tamiya or you can always get some good painting tape from local auto paint/part stores. Make sure you burnish (rub down) the edges of the tape really well. Misting on the first few coats instead of starting with a heavy coat helps build up paint on the tape without much chance to get under it. Another step some take is once the tape is down, they spray clear or the base coat (in your case white) so that any paint that gets under the tape is either clear or the same color as you are trying to cover.

Jordan That's the same way I do it and it works pretty well. Tamiya tape seems to leave a smaller ridge between colors. When painting the engine/transmission area, I will use various shades of Testors Metalizers, and mix up some different metallic colors using Tamiya bottle paint. You might be suprised what adding a little black or white to aluminum can do. A little black wash can further enhance the details. G

So far so good. Those are great tips. And I am jealous over how nice those engines look. I took someone's tip about adding black to metallic colors like aluminum, silver and steel. I added a few drops of black to steel and use that for lug nuts and they came out pretty good. Jordan, I like that idea about spraying a base or clear coat. I'll try that one first.

As an alternative to Tamiya tape, if you can not locate it locally (like me!!!!) is the blue vinyl tape that 3M makes for masking real cars. I use the 1/8th width. It is actually a vinyl so it stretches around curves easily. I am waiting on an order of masking tape from *Finesse It*, a company that deals with full scale pin strippers and custom painters. It is ridiculously thin (I have a sample) and it will make about any curve you could possibly want. Paint bleeding under is a non issue, and it will not pull up paint layers underneath.
The coat of clear over the tape edges is an old trick to prevent paint from bleeding under the tape. Let the clear dry then shoot the next color. You have started correctly, paint from light to dark.
Mixing metal colors is great. it really allows some detailing and dry brushing, plus washes, are also a very good detailing trick. Hopefully I will have a camera soon! I am going to make the trip to the Berlin ARCA race with James Hylton (they need someone who can throw the 2nd can of gas to the gas man! LOL!!) so I need a good camera just in case I have time to take any pictures. Probably help drive the truck up there, so I will be gone from about this coming Tuesday through Monday of the next week.
