I was given this model half built, stripped it down and rebuilt it finishing it all off to what you see. I've posted it here as although it was a failure in the French Gordon Bennett trials it did much better on American soil, albeit with an uprated and more usual radiator. What do you guys think and does any body have any pics of the Vanderbilt race in 1904? Has anyone else built cars from this era? thanks for looking. Ian

Really nice work resurrecting this model and welcome aboard. The finish looks real.

Ian,
Do you have another photo of the radiator...that's pretty hectic! I love the cars of that period! Monsters with class! Great job! I'm glad you joined us!

Thanks for the comments guys. It was very interesting to see how the build was started. It's made from cola tins, balsa wood and card, with some Isopon 38 fillers. I brush painted it with Humbrol enamels and washed it with thinned matt black. There are pics on my Face book page, feel free to visit, and for those who don't do fb here's a couple more. Interestingly it has three hand levers and two foot pedals, I'm inclined to think it has a manual clutch. I'll sort anothor rad' pic out asap and sorry photography isn't my strong point. regards Ian

Front end pic as promised, I knew I had one. The offset starting handle is rather novel too. Any perceived cooling or aerodynamic advantages proved to be non existant and this car actually finished the race without it's bonnet. Apparently even stopping to cool the engine with wet rags and running with the cooling vents fully open failed to solve the over heating problem.

ianknott,
THAT is really neat! I like this era of open-wheel race cars too. Working on some Indy type cars. Yours is fantastic!
